Evergreen Pemiership soccer star Teddy Sheringham made his official entrance into a new professional sport this week by representing VC Poker at the World Poker Tour (WPT) Mandalay Poker Championship in Las Vegas. He competed against some of the world's top poker players for a first prize of more than $1 million.
Sheringham made it through the first day of the tournament coming out in 66th place in a field that started with 349 players. His cards didn't hold out as well on the second day, and he was eliminated from the tournament.
Along with the usual cast of poker pros such as T.J. Cloutier, Jennifer Harman, and Joe "Atticus Finch" Sebok, the tournament included some celebrity players such as Shannon Elizabeth and Jennifer Tilly.
The event follows Sheringham's online debut as the ambassador for VC Poker in which he's taken on online players from all over the world.
"Teddy is a sportsman who embodies the highest virtues of skill, professionalism and sportsmanship. We're delighted to welcome him as the new face of VC Poker and to give our online players the chance of pitting their skills against his," said VC Poker chairman Victor Chandler.
Sheringham, who recently signed a new one-year playing contract with West Ham to secure his place as the oldest striker in Premiership history, said that poker is something that interests him as a profession when he eventually gives up soccer.
"It's a great step from the East End of London to the Wild West of Vegas but I reckon playing poker at the top level takes as much nerve as playing top soccer," Sheringham said. "VC Poker has given me a great opportunity to try my luck in some of the biggest poker tournaments in the world and I'm looking forward to this new sporting challenge."
