Review

Small Stakes Hold'em - Winning Big with Expert Play is written by three strategic masters, Ed Miller, David Sklansky, and Mason Malmuth, and may very well be the ultimate guide to beating the small stakes Hold'em game. Despite the fact the book deals exclusively with low stakes, readers should not be deceived: this is not a beginner's book. Indeed, not only does it not explain the basics of poker, but it is recommended the reader have a firm grasp of the game of poker, its lingo, and concepts in order to obtain maximum benefit from the book's theories and examples.

Each of the three authors bring with them a wealth of experience related to poker playing and the formulation of expert strategy, thus lending a feel of reliability and credibility to the theories and examples proffered in Small Stakes Hold'em - Winning Big with Expert Play. If you are considering purchasing this book, be aware it teaches rather than entertains. Without a doubt, if read and understood correctly, this book will greatly improve the low-level limit game of most beginner and advanced poker players. Readers more interested in a light read would do better to look into acquiring alternate poker literature, for example, the books of Phil Gordon.

This book consists of seven parts. It begins by taking the reader through gambling concepts and pre-flop play, and continues on to discuss each stage of the poker hand, concluding with river play. There is also a great section of hand quizzes. Small Stakes Hold'em - Winning Big with Expert Play also offers a simple and ingenious feature that should be mandatory in all poker literature: a "Notes" section consisting of a couple of blank pages at the end of the book, enabling players to keep track of their thoughts while reading through the theories presented by the authors.

This book reads 369 pages in total, including a glossary and index.
