September High-Stakes: Gus Drops $1m, Kibler-Melby Runs Wild
September in the online poker trenches was a month with two different halves.
The first was action-packed to the limit with hundreds of thousands of dollars moving across the tables every day.
Then most of the regs apparently focused on the WCOOP. But there were still plenty of upswings and landslides.
The dominant player of the month was Cort Kibler-Melby who piled up almost $2m in winnings. On the flip side Swedish player Denoking and Germans Sebastian Ruthenberg and Julius Fleischer had months so bad they moved behind even Gus Hansen.
Kibler-Melby Dominates 2-7 Triple Draw
As long as there wasn’t an “end boss” waiting for them a lot of the regulars tried out their hands this month at the now fashionable game of 2-7 Triple Draw.
28-year-old German-American Cort Kibler-Melby was responsible for a lot of them quickly moving back to the Mixed Game and NLHE tables.
The London-based player had the hottest run of anyone this year when he won $1.7m in just 72 hours Sept. 8-10.
He literally destroyed players like Trueteller and KagomeKagome and pretty much chased them away from the tables.
A distant second for September is Team PokerStars Online pro Ike Haxton with $700k profit. Most of this came from NLHE expert Denoking, who was beaten in the game he is most prolific in.
Denoking, who is rumored to be Viktor Blom’s buddy Denis Bahonjic, had a terrible day on Sept. 12 when he lost half a million to Haxton in just half an hour.
Ruthenberg, Fleischer Get Thrashed
Gus Hansen lost another $1m in September and it became so bad, it seems, that he didn’t show up to play the last few days of the month.
There were three players who fared even worse than Hansen for the month, though. Apart from above mentioned Denoking these were Sebastian "taktloss47" Ruthenberg and Julius "kagomekagome" Fleischer.
Ruthenberg returned to high-stakes poker about a year ago and raised some attention when he went on several winning streaks, mainly in 2-7 Triple Draw. It seemed like he wished to get his place back in the limelight.
But during the first half of September several players cut half a million dollars out of the bankroll of the former WSOP bracelet winner.
Fleischer had an even worse month than Ruthenberg. His losses amounted to $1m in September so across the year he now stands at a dramatic -$2.5m.
Biggest Pot of the Month
One of the biggest battles in September was in heads-up No Limit Hold’em between American Doug "WCGRider" Polk and his Swedish opponent Denoking.
For about one week the two met every day and generate numerous pots of more than $200k.
By far the biggest one was a typical set-up -- in fact, the most unavoidable set-up there is in poker. All the chips went into the middle pre-flop and you probably know what’s coming at showdown.
So did the players, which is why they agreed to deal the board twice.
Denoking is obviously in a world of trouble and, as it turns out, none of the 10 cards dealt was another king. The first board ran
The Swede actually made the second nut flush but Polk held the ace of spades. The second board ran
Even worse for Denoking as his kings were drawing as slim as possible on the flop. The pot was $381k and all the money went over to Polk.
For Denoking the duel with Polk ended in a disaster. He lost $750k to the American and became the biggest loser of the month.
Polk, on the other hand, wasn’t able to hold on to all of his winnings but was still able to finish the month up $320k, just missing the top five of September.
