Security guard gets 4 years for poker robbery

A security guard in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) has been sentenced to four years in prison for robbing a poker arcade in western Garapan, it was reported last week. Local newspaper The Saipan Tribune revealed that 47-year-old Alex-ander Reyes Cana was found guilty of robbing his employer, Fun & Games Poker, and kidnapping fellow employee Nilda Sisons, a cashier who works in the poker venue, after pleading guilty and entering a plea bargain to the Superior Court.

Cana was charged by the Attorney General's Office with robbery and kidnapping on September 13, 2005. According to The Saipan Tribune, "Cana entered the cashier's booth and forced Sisons into the bathroom where he locked her in by wiring the door shut." Court papers said he confined Sisons for a substantial period of time while he went about collecting $25,342.50 from the cashier's booth. Sisons reportedly climbed out of the bathroom window and went for help. Investigators confirmed that Cana was on duty on the day of the robbery. He was arrested that evening.

Superior Court Associate Judge Ramona V. Manglona presided over the case and ordered Cana to pay $25,324.50 to L&T Corp., owner of Fun & Games Poker, as compensation. She also directed the defendant to write a letter of apology to the company and Sisons.

The defendant was sentenced to ten years in prison, all of which were suspended save for four years which Cana must now serve without parole. The defendant was given credit for the 162 days he has already spent in prison, and will be placed on ten years probation after completing his sentence.

Editor's Note: CNMI is located in the South Pacific Ocean about three-quarters the way from Hawaii to the Philippines. An island territory, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is joined in a political union with the United States and retains an independent government and constitution. The territory consists of 14 different islands, of which Saipan, Rota, and Tinian are the largest. As of July, 2005, its population was counted at 80,362.
