Review

"My only worry is that they have given away too much information." That is what poker author and pro player Matt Lessinger had to say about Secrets the Pros Won't Tell You About Winning Hold'em Poker, the most recent book penned by poker author Lou Krieger and poker playing literary agent and author Sheree Bykofsky. And Lessinger's praise is not far off target.

Lou and Sheree have put together a book attempting to reveal the "secrets" of the pros, and they actually get the job done. Many books promise to tell you tricky moves and plays that only the best players know about and use. This, of course, is usually untrue as there are no "secret plays" or mystical tricks in poker. Rather, it is the mindset, knowledge and experience of a top pro that sometimes gives them an almost uncanny edge over opponents.

The good news is that this is something that can be learned to a large degree, and this book is a good start for any player wanting to pick up bits and pieces of knowledge that will take their game to the next level. "Secrets the Pros Won't Tell You" impresses by providing the reader with a vast amount of information on just about every tactic, theory and play out there. Unfortunately, the information is not even close to being optimally presented, with literally hundreds of sentences highlighting different areas without any apparent order or logic.

Aside from poor structuring of information, this is very competent piece of poker literature that will prove useful for the committed player who wants to learn how to maximize his winnings by playing better and more deceptive poker. Beginners starting out in poker, on the other hand, should look elsewhere for their first book because this one is not it.

The book consists of eleven main chapters.

  1. Basic Concepts and Play
  2. Tactics, Strategies and Ploys
  3. Image
  4. Hands
  5. Money
  6. Tournament Play
  7. Online Play
  8. Minimal Math
  9. Growing As a Player
  10. A Journey To the Dark Side
  11. A Plan for Winning Poker

In addition to the main chapters, the book features an index and some information on the authors.

Secrets the Pros Won't Tell You totals 262 pages including the index.
