Review
In his book, Professional Poker: The Essential Guide to Playing for a Living, author Mark Blade poses the question, "Do you have what it takes to play poker for a living?" and then attempts to assist readers in determining the answer. To ascertain whether you are ready to leave the home games and low-limit tables behind, Blade fires a battery of questions at his readers, such as: Do you have the bankroll to go pro? Are you good enough? What are your long term goals?
If you are an aspiring pro pondering a move up to the professional league this book is definitely worth reading. Recreational players or those players happy with having poker as a lucrative hobby will find little use for the bulk of Professional Poker as its main focus is on players considering a professional poker playing career, although there are a couple of chapters that may improve the game of any poker player. All in all, this book is an excellent companion for any aspiring pro, and may prove a worthy read if you if are just looking to plug some leaks in your game.
Professional Poker: The Essential Guide to Playing for a Living consists of six main sections: (1) The Decision to Become a Pro Player; (2) Money Matters; (3) The Education of a Pro Player; (4) The Life of a Pro Poker Player; (5) Advanced Mental and Emotional Tips; and (6) Advanced Poker Strategy Tips. Each section consists of an individual introduction and chapters. The text is fairly easy to read and the reasoning in most chapters requires no in-depth prior knowledge of the professional poker playing world or poker theory in general.
This book reads 288 pages in total, including the introduction and index.
