Police raid breaks up poker game in Indiana

By: Sarah Polson

Twelve people were arrested Friday when police broke up an illegal high-stakes poker game in an apartment in East Chicago, Ind. Large amounts of cash and 19 cases of beer were also seized.

Investigators from the gang and narcotics unit went to the apartment building in the East Calumet neighborhood of the city where neighbors had complained that some sort of illegal activity was occurring on a regular basis. From the outside, investigators were able to observe people gambling inside the apartment.

Upon entering the apartment after a 67-year-old man let them in, they found two boxes full of cash in the living room area where the people were playing cards, and they found a sealed lockbox that also contained cash and a ledger.

None of the people in the apartment admitted to living there, and none would say who was in charge. Police also said they found no evidence that the apartment was even being used as a residence.

The people arrested ranged in age from 33 to 73 and are all facing charges of maintaining a common nuisance and visiting a common nuisance.
