Police arrest two in poker player robbery
Two men accused of attacking and robbing poker player Jason Potter last week after he cashed in the Aussie Millions made their first appearance in court today in Melbourne.
Dwayne Johnstone, 32, is facing five charges including armed robbery, assault and drug possession. Vhyharn Arumughasamy, 26, is being charged with one count of armed robbery.
They did not apply for bail, and Magistrate Sarah Dawes ordered them to face the Melbourne Magistrates Court in March.
Johnstone and Arumughasamy are accused of attacking Jason Potter, 22, as he was walking back to his hotel after cashing in his chips at the Crown Casino Jan. 21.
Potter had placed 31st in a field of 780 players in the Aussie Millions Poker Championship to earn more than $31,000. He was carrying that money in American and Australian banknotes when he was robbed.
According to the Victoria Herald Sun, Jason was hit from behind while walking on Spencer Street Bridge in Melbourne at 4:30 a.m. His attackers were armed with knives and grabbed the money from his front sweatshirt pocket.
Melbourne detectives executed two search warrants on Thursday in connection with the case and arrested Johnstone and Arumughasamy last night.
