PokerStars.com announced last week it surpassed the 5 million player mark on March 30, 2006, when 35-year-old George Draper from Las Vegas registered at the poker room. In honor of the momentous occasion, PokerStars.com has awarded Draper, a chef who is new to the online poker world, with a World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event prize package and an entry into the Main Event of the fourth annual World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP).
PokerStars.com, which launched in September, 2001, said the number of players on the site has doubled in less than one year.
Chris Welch, PokerStars.com Group Marketing Director, said, "It is no surprise that PokerStars.com is leading the boom in online poker. Many people who might be intimidated at the thought of playing inside a casino find that playing at PokerStars.com is a comfortable and convenient alternative."
"Millions of players from all walks of life who are living in many different countries have signed up at PokerStars because we make playing poker fun, exciting, and easy," he continued.
During peak hours, PokerStars.com has over 100,000 players simultaneously competing at the site in tens of thousands of games and tournaments. By comparison, PokerStars.com has nearly 50 times more players and games than the world's largest land-based poker room, which has only 243 tables.
