PokerStars sending players to Life Ball 2008
PokerStars is helping raise money for Life Ball 2008, and players can help out and potentially win a trip to the event through online tournaments.
The Life Ball is an annual charity event and fundraiser for AIDS research and has been running since 1993. It has become a celebration of life attended by celebrities and philanthropists from around the world, and PokerStars offers its players a chance to be a part of that.
The poker site will host a freeroll on Sunday, May 3, at 4 p.m. ET that will award the winner with a Life Ball prize package. To get into the freeroll, players must place in the top 100 of daily freerolls taking place at 2:10 p.m. and 8:10 p.m. ET at PokerStars until Friday, May 2.
The Life Ball prize package includes a flight for two to Vienna where they will have two nights in a luxury hotel and two tickets to attend the 2008 Life Ball. On top of that, PokerStars is throwing in $250 for expenses.
The top 200 players in the May 3 freeroll will also receive frequent player point credits based on where they place.
That's not the only opportunity PokerStars players will have to get to the Ball. Any player who makes a direct donation of $1 or more to Life Ball will receive entry into a $2,000 freeroll taking place Sunday, May 4, at 1 p.m.
Donations can be made via a player's PokerStars account, or by making a direct bank transfer per instructions on the Life Ball information page at PokerStars.
Freeroll tickets will be credited to each player's PokerStars account approximately three hours before the tournament starts. First place will receive a Life Ball prize package and cash prize, and other cash prizes will be awarded according to PokerStars' standard payout structure.
Another avenue to make a donation and win a trip to the Life Ball is through a $10+$10 No-Limit Hold'em tournament taking place Sunday at 1 p.m. as well. PokerStars has set up the tournament so that $10 goes to the prize pool and the second $10 goes to charity.
PokerStars has also pledged to match the amount raised through this tournament, with the final figure raised being doubled if more than 500 players enter.
The first-place finisher will receive a cash prize and a Life Ball prize package.
Last year, more than 45,000 poker players entered the PokerStars charity tournaments, helping the poker site to donate more than $150,000 to the Life Ball.
"As one of the main sponsors of this year's event, we're giving [players] the chance to win cash and an exclusive, money-can't-buy Life Ball prize," PokerStars says on its site.
The Life Ball is scheduled to take place May 17 at the Vienna City Hall. It will be broadcast live on Austrian TV. Since its inception, the Life Ball has raised millions of dollars for AIDS charities.
