Question

You're playing in a live $1/$2 game at your local casino. In this hand two players limp in early position and you make it $15 in the cut-off. The button folds and the tight-ish old guy in the small blind makes it $50 to go. The limpers fold.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Fold

This is a pretty clear fold. A tight player isn't about to three-bet with anything you beat in a live $1/$2 game. Plus when he makes his re-raise so big you aren't getting nearly the odds required to set mine. Just fold - there will be much better spots for you to get your money in.

Question

In your six-max game online the player under the gun raises to $8. You call on the button and the small blind folds. The big blind calls and the flop comes T 7 4. The big blind checks as does under the gun. You bet $16 and the big blind raises to $40. Under the gun folds.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Raise

First things first, don't fold. Because you bet on the button after the original raiser had checked it makes your hand look significantly more like a bluff than if you were the pre-flop raiser. That leaves calling or raising. So weigh the chance that your opponent will keep bluffing vs. the chance your opponent will stack off with a ten here to decide what to do. Against a fish I'd be more willing to raise-get-it-in because they love stacking off with pairs.

Question

In your six-max game online a regular in the cut-off raises to $6. You call on the button and the blinds fold. The flop comes Q 9 4. He c-bets $10.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Raise

This is a great spot for a bluff raise. Your opponent is going to c-bet this dry-ish, queen-high board a high percentage of the time. You have a gutshot, an overcard and a backdoor flush draw. Even if your raise is called you have a pretty good Plan B. So raise in hopes of getting a fold but realize you still have outs if called.

Question

You're playing in the middle stages of an online tournament. You're a few spots away from the money and are completely rolled for the tournament you're playing. In this hand it's folded around to the button, who is a regular. He shoves for $20,000. The small blind folds.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Call

It sucks, but you have to call. Luckily you're properly rolled for these tournaments because you're probably going to have to dodge some cards. When the small blind is short stacked and you have just over 10BB, the button is going to be shoving extremely wide to pick up the dead money. Call because you're miles ahead of his button-shoving range.

Question

In your six-max game online it's folded to you in the cut-off. You raise to $8 and the good regular calls on the button. The flop comes Q T 6. You c-bet $14 and he calls. The turn comes 7. You fire $35 and he raises to $115.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Fold

When a deep-stacked opponent raises you on the turn and you hold one pair you should probably just fold. You really don't want to stack off without significant history with your opponent. His line just shows way too much strength, so fold and move on to the next hand.

Question

You're playing in the later stages of a live multi-table tournament. In this hand a very loose-aggressive player raises it in the cut-off to $1,400. A looser, but not bad, player calls on the button and the small blind folds.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Raise all-in

This is a great spot to shove all-in as a squeeze. Obviously, you're not shoving for value, but you're shoving to pick up the dead money in the pot. The cut-off is going to be raising a very wide range from late position trying to steal. The button knows this and chose to just flat rather than re-raise. Thus his hand is likely weaker. So shove all-in and expect both players to fold.

Question

In your six-max game online you raise to $8 under the gun and it's folded to the regular on the button who raises to $25. The blinds fold.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Fold

It's going to be very tough to turn a profit any other way out of position with tens in this hand. If you call you're going to be put to some tough decisions out of position. If you re-raise you're going to be getting it in with the worst hand a lot. So just fold now and pick a better spot.
