Question

In your six-max game online, it's folded to the very good player in the cut-off. He raises to $8 and the button folds.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Call

Just call. When you're deep and out of position against a very tough opponent you want to keep the pot small. You do NOT want to build a giant pot just so you can be bluffed on a later street. Even though you might normally re-raise given all these factors, this spot is a call.

Question

In your six-max game online, it's folded to the aggressive regular in the small blind. The two of you have a good deal of history and he knows that you play well/aggressive. He raises to $6 and you call. The flop comes J 8 5 and he bets $11. You raise to $38 and he shoves.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Call

When you're in a blind vs. blind situation, the more aggressive player wins. If you were in this very spot, you would play a draw the very same way by raising on the flop. So when he re-raises over top, you have to call because you're near the top of your flop-raising range and it's entirely possible he's trying to value-town his draw. Make the call and expect to be good.

Question

You're playing in a live $1/$2 game at your local casino. The stacks are deep and there is one very aggressive/tough player. In this hand, he raises to $10 from middle position and you three-bet to $35 on the button. The flop comes J 4 2 and he checks. You bet $50 and he calls. The turn comes 3 and he checks.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Check behind

When you're this deep against a very tough opponent, checking back this turn is just fine for pot control. You don't want to build the pot so big that you'll have to make a tough decision on the river, so check behind. It's unlikely a good opponent is putting too much more money in with worse.

Question

In your six-max game online, a fishy player limps under the gun. A regular on his left raises to $10 and you call on the button. The fish makes it $35. The regular calls and you call. The flop comes 9 9 3. UTG checks and the other reg checks. You check through and the turn comes 7. The fish bets $100 and the regular calls.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Call

May as well just call. With $308 in the pot with the bet and the call it'll be easy to get stacks in on the river. You have the stone-cold nuts and you can not be outdrawn. With the pot so large, this is one of the few times it's ok to slow play.

Question

You're playing in a six-max game online. In this hand, a very loose and aggressive player raises to $8 under the gun. Your read on him is that he likes to see flops and he likes to play fast. An ABC regular calls in the cut-off and the button folds.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Raise to $50

Against a player who is deep and likes to see flops, you may as well get as much money in before the flop as you can. Raise to $50 and expect to be called.

Question

In your six-max game online, it's folded to you on the button and you make it $6. The fish in the small blind and the regular in the big blind both call. The flop comes 4 8 9 and everybody checks. The turn comes 7. The small blind bets $17, the big blind calls and you call. The river comes Q. The small blind bets $60. The big blind shoves for $188.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Fold

The big blind has a flush here a very high percentage of the time. He's not going to try and bluff the fish and he isn't going to try and value-town with JT here with you still to act. He has a flush, so fold your small flush and move on.
