Question

In one of your trademark six-max games online, a loose player raises under the gun to $7. You three-bet for value to $22. The very tight button cold-calls and the original raiser folds. The flop comes Q 6 7. You bet $35 and the button raises to $80.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Fold

The button's range is very very tight here. Like AA-QQ and that’s it. After a raise and a three-bet, tight-aggressive players often just flat the top three hands, because four-betting turns their hands faceup. Once he raises the flop you are crushed and it’s time to get out with what chips you have remaining. So fold and move on.

Question

You’re playing in a six-max game online. In this hand it’s folded to you on the button. You raise to $8 and the small blind folds but the tight-aggressive big blind reraises to $30. You elect to smooth-call and the flop comes 5 7 9. Your opponent bets $50.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Raise all-in

Once you choose to flat-call the three-bet you pretty much have to get it in on any flop. In this hand all the options suck - if you raise all-in you’re going to be called with probably a pair and a draw or an overcard and a draw; if you fold you’re folding the best hand a lot of the time, and if you call you have no idea where you stand on a dangerous board. Raising all-in now is the least bad of the three options, so ship it in now and hope to hold.

Question

In this hand of your six-max game online a winning tight-aggressive opponent with whom you have no history raises to $8 from under the gun. It's folded to you on the button.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Call

With no history, facing a raise from under the gun, it’s better to just call in position and play poker on the flop than to overinflate the pot by reraising.

Question

In a six-max game online, in this hand you raise to $8 from under the gun and are called by the tight-aggressive button. The blinds fold and you take a flop heads-up of T 5 8. You bet $13 and your opponent calls. The turn comes Q; you bet $25 and your opponent calls. The river comes 4.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Bet-fold

You have a strong hand that does have value in betting this river. Your opponent may have a hand like 99, 77 or some other underpair, or a hand like Q-J. All of these may decide to call a river bet, so stick $60 out there and fold if you are raised.

Question

You’re playing in a tough $1/$2 game online. In this hand a competent and good player raises to $8 on the button and you three-bet to $28. He calls and the flop comes A 7 T. You bet $40 and he calls. The turn comes 2.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Check-raise

You have pretty much the nuts in a three-bet pot with top pair, top kicker. If you bet you have a very awkward stack size, with $137 in the pot and $180 in your stack. So you bet leaving yourself no money behind, or you check expecting your opponent to bet with whatever he called the flop with. Then you can easily get the rest of your money into the pot.

Question

In your six-max game online, an aggressive player makes a raise to $8 from middle position. It's folded around to you and you elect to just call in the small blind with T T. The big blind folds and the flop comes A A 4. You check and your opponent bets $13.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Call

There isn't too much more you can do. Raising is bad because your opponent isn't going to call with worse. Folding is bad because your opponent is probably c-betting his entire range. So just call and play poker on the turn.

  • Fold (10%)
  • Call (52%)
  • Raise (38%)

Question

True to form, you’re playing in a six-max game online. In this hand you raise to $8 from early position. A loose player calls in the cut-off and a TAG calls on the button. The blinds fold. The flop comes 4 9 8. You bet $20; the cut-off calls and the button raises to $80.

What should you do?

Correct Answer: Fold

A good TAG is not reraising in this spot with anything you beat, especially after the cold caller in the middle. He likely has a set or a flopped two pair and you are miles behind. Best-case scenario, he has a combo draw and you are maybe 50% to win, but that is a small portion of his range. Fold now and watch what he turns over when the fish calls.

  • Raise all-in (53%)
