Will Durkee
Count Will Durkee among the fresh-faced up-and-comers who've added a World Series of Poker bracelet to their relatively empty tournament resume.
The then-24-year-old picked up his first event win at the 2007 WSOP in the $2,000 No-Limit Hold'em championship.
Despite his success, Durkee has no plans of turning pro; right now he has too much on the go. For instance, an undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Virginia and a pending masters degree in liberal arts from Northwestern University in Chicago that he’s hoping might lead to a teaching job someday.
The Pittsburg, Pa., native is also an athlete. Durkee was a student wrestler and an honorable mention All-American in the NCAA Division I and an Academic All-American. He now coaches the sport, but doesn't take a full course load of classes to ensure he has time to squeeze in time for poker.
One thing is for sure though: Durkee's first WSOP win amounted to $566,916, in other words, the annual salary of a first-teacher several times over. Still, for now the game is just a lucrative hobby.
"I don't think I could play poker on the circuit," Durkee told PokerListings.com after winning his gold bracelet. "I really don't know if I'd be able to do it and one tournament win isn't an indication of being able to do it over the long term. I think I'll just take these things one at a time and see where it goes from there."
Though he might not think his game is ready to go pro, it is showing promise.
In addition to his success at the 2007 WSOP, Durkee also cashed at two World Series events in 2006 - a 54th place finish in $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em and a 14th place result in $2,000 No-Limit Hold'em. He also cashed in the championship event of the Foxwoods Poker Classic in 2006.
