The 2007 World Series of Poker marked a golden wedding anniversary for Michael Spegal - it was just 41 years ahead of schedule. The 39-year-old landed his first gold bracelet for Pot-Limit Hold’em on his ninth anniversary.
But what the day lacked in romance, it made up for in cash: Spegal pulled in $252,290 for the win, his first major tournament victory.
Having played just one WSOP Main Event after winning his seat online, "Bob Cat" Spegal was a relative newcomer to the series but still managed to knock out seasoned pro Gavin Smith in heads-up play.
A confirmed poker enthusiast, Spegal told PokerListings.com that family and work have been his first priority.
"Family is important to me, as are my businesses, so there's just not that much time for poker," he said. "Now, to have this happen tonight is amazing and I really want to play more in the future."
The former U.S. Marine was born in Newton, Iowa, but now makes his home in St. Marys, Georgia. There, he runs an equipment rental business and UPS store with his wife, Jeanne. Together they have four children.
