Johan Storakers is one Sweden’s most famous and successful poker players. He specializes in big live tournaments and has two World Poker Tour final tables and nine World Series of Poker cashes on his resume.
The biggest win of Storaker’s career came in the 2003 Master Classics of Poker in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The Swede busted world-class players Marcel Luske and David “Devilfish” Ulliot in consecutive hands on the final table, and went on to defeat Ian Oldershaw heads-up to win the title and €243,540 ($282,365) in prize money. In addition to this, Storakers has won several local Swedish tournaments, such as “Pokermiljonen IV” in 2006, and the 2007 Swedish Open Poker Championship.
Storakers was introduced to the game of poker at the 1987 Luffarschack, or Swedish Tic-Tac-Toe, Championship, where he and Swedish poker icon Stefan Dios played some micro-stakes Seven-Card Stud on the side. The 16-year-old Storakers was immediately hooked, but it wasn’t until 1990 that he started playing on a more serious level, at the legendary poker club “Kortoxen” in Stockholm. By 1997, Storakers had quit his job as a paper boy and started playing poker professionally. Today he plays for Ultimate Bet in major live tournaments around the world.
Storakers describes himself as a disciplined and rather tight player, but if he has “10 outs or more” he will play the hand hard. He also says that he likes to “play the player” and that one of his strengths at the poker table is to discover patterns in his opponents’ game.
The Swede says that he enjoys life as a poker pro, and that it’s fun to play most of the time. If he wasn’t a poker player he would probably be involved in business of some kind, but he would never go back to having a 9-to-5 job. With millions of dollars in tournament winnings, who can blame him?
