James Richburg
There's a lot of talk about only the best of the best taking down the H.O.R.S.E. events - the big names such as Brunson, Greenstein, Reese... Richburg?
James Richburg won his second World Series of Poker gold bracelet in 2007, after winning the pro-laden $2,500 H.O.R.S.E. tournament.
The Henderson, Nev., native sure lives in the right neck of the woods to be an expert card player. Still, though he's just a brief commute from Las Vegas this veteran rounder still hunts for action in L.A. The Commerce Casino is, in fact, where Richburg has been perfecting his mixed game.
All the back and forth paid off, though, when Richburg moneyed $238,881 for his first-place H.O.R.S.E. victory.
But this was no overnight success story. Richburg was 52 at the time of his win and had been playing poker professionally since he was 26 years old.
"It's enabled me to provide for my family and have a lot of leisure time," he told PokerListings.com in 2007. "Compared to a lot of people who struggle with their job and have a boss to answer to, my life is pretty good."
So is his WSOP record: In addition to the H.O.R.S.E., he also holds another gold bracelet from the 2006 Razz event. His seven career cashes at the tournament have amounted to more than half a million dollars, with his first in-the-money finish taking place in 1991.
But you won't find a string of No-Limit events fleshing out his results. The Alabamian steers away from the popular poker variety.
"My games, the Limit games, were probably better in the 10 years prior to the last three years when poker's really gotten big," said Richburg.
"No-Limit has probably hurt my game, but again I have no complaints. It brings people into the casino, and maybe they'll drift into my game. I'm a Limit player though; I've never really tried playing No-Limit."
Richburg, who plays poker and manages his investments for a living, is the father of three grown children.
