Filippo Candio perhaps embodies the passionate Italian poker player better than anyone else.
Candio is well-known for his huge smile at the poker table, excessive celebrations and extroverted personality.
Hailing from Cagliari, Sardinia, his father was a famous lawyer. After studying Greek and Latin, Candio had plans to follow suit but eventually found his way into poker.
Candio soon found success playing live cash games in Italy and then started playing at a number of live tournaments in the region.
Candio won the Campionato Italiano in San Remo in 2009 to take home $185,271. Along the way he knocked out Italian poker super-star Max Pescatori, although the two later became close friends.
In 2010 Candio made his first cash at the WSOP in a $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em event but the best was yet to come.
After eight days of poker, Candio had secured a spot at the 2010 WSOP Main Event final table.
As one of the middle-stacks with 16 million chips, Candio was the first Italian to make the November Nine.
