Chris Reslock

Chris Reslock

  • Name: Chris Reslock
  • Nickname: Chris the Cabby
  • Current Residence: Atlantic City, N.J., United States
  • Birth Place: Chicago, Ill.

His nickname might be unassuming, but Chris "the Cabby" Reslock could justify being just a little impudent at the poker table.

Reslock won his first World Series of Poker gold bracelet in the pro-heavy $5,000 Seven-Card Stud championship in 2007, defeating one of the industry's best players, Phil Ivey, minutes into heads-up.

The Chicago, Ill., native is best known around tables in Atlantic City, where he worked as a cab driver before discovering $10/$20 Hold'em games when gambling was legalized in the city in 1993.

He became so good at poker that driving cabs just didn't make sense anymore. Nonetheless, Reslock wanted something to fall back on, should he ever be sent to the rail permanently.

So he parked his cab in the casino lot, comforted from knowing that he could still ferry tourists around he city if poker playing didn't work out. Needless to say, he never did need to go back for the car.

Instead Reslock is a driving force in the Atlantic City poker scene. His record in the city is impressive, including multiple tournament wins and countless final tables at casinos in his hometown since 2000.

His first place results in the city include: the U.S. Poker Championship $500 Seven-Card Stud event in 2001, $500 No-Limit Hold'em and $500 Limit Seven-Card Stud at the 2003 Tropicana Poker Championship Series, $500 Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo at the Showdown at the Sands that same year, $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em at the 2006 WSOPC Harrah's event, as well as $750 No-Limit Hold'em and $300 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo Eight-or-Better at the 2006 Trump Poker Classic.

Most notable, however, is Reslock's first-place finish in the 2005 WSOP tournament circuit in Atlantic City. The $335,000 circuit event payday is Chris the Cabby's biggest cash to date, trumping even the $258,000 that accompanied his gold bracelet.

Reslock has also final tabled events too numerous to name and has cashed in four World Series tournaments as well as at the World Poker Tour Borgata Winter Open in 2006.

During that time he's also been able to witness poker phenom Phil Ivey's evolution from a young guy playing under a fake ID at an Atlantic City casino to a full-fledged poker star. That said, being a celebrity or - as third-place finisher David Oppenheim learned in the 2007 Stud event - a high-stakes cash gamer player doesn’t give you the password to the gold bracelet vault.

Even now, though, with a bauble of his own and tournament winnings alone tallying up to more than $1 million, Reslock has nothing but good memories of his former career.

"I'm pretty much retired, but I'll always be a cab driver at heart," he told PokerListings.com after his bracelet win. "It's a wonderful job. You never know what's going to happen next. You never know where you're going to go and where you might have to take someone."

And when betting on a heads-up match between Phil Ivey and a relative unknown, you never know who'll get you paid.
