Poker players traded the warm weather of the Bahamas for sunny Melbourne as the Aussie Millions kicked off this week.

Thousands of players made the journey to Crown Casino as poker news begins to flow from the Land Down Under.

There was plenty of news that had nothing to do with the Aussie Millions this week, however, and we’re counting it down in our weekly Poker News in Brief.

This week we’ll take a look at the 2011 LAPC, Moorman domination, a new bwin iPhone app and more.

L.A. Poker Classic Prelims Begin

The 2011 LAPC kicked off this week with a $335 No-Limit Hold'em side event.

The tournament drew an astonishing 4,179 players to create a prize pool of $1.1 million with $250,000 dedicated to first place alone.

After Day 1, seasoned live pro Thu Nguyen held the chip lead with 865,000.

The LAPC has 54 events this year running from now until March 3. The $10,000 WPT main event starts Feb. 27.

bwin iPhone App Goes Live

bwin Poker players in the U.K. and Austria can officially play for real money on their iPhones.

Users will have access to a full-featured No-Limit Hold’em client complete with a landscape view and a one click sit-out button for cell phone interruption.

The bwin Poker app is currently available for download in the iTunes store for free.

Huge Satellite for APT Philippines

The Asian Poker Tour is running a major satellite on Jan. 30 for APT Philippines.

The No-Limit Hold’em mega satellite at Resort World Manila will have a buy-in of Php 5,000 + 300 and guarantees a Php 500k prizepool with the top 18 places getting paid.

First place will also receive a seat in APT Philippines in Manila on March 28, also at Resort World Manila.

Last year Michael Cua won a satellite into APT Philippines and then won the event outright for $172,200.

Foucault Joins Team PokerStars Online

Team PokerStars Online has added Andrew “Foucault” Brokos to their ranks.

A notoriously tough online grinder, Brokos also has a considerable live presence as he made deep runs in the 2008 and 2010 WSOP Main Events.

“I can honestly say that it's an honor to represent PokerStars,” Brokos said. “Not only do they offer the best games and the best customer service of any site I’ve ever played on, but they are by far the most trustworthy and upstanding.”

Brokos joins a team that also includes noted online stars nanonoko, Leatherass9, Chiren80 and Boku87.

Hot Streak for Moorman1

Chris “Moorman1” Moorman was nearly unstoppable this week winning four individual online poker tournaments for a total of $54k.

The U.K. player won the UB Poker $50k Guaranteed for $15k, the PokerStars $50k Rebuy for $13k, the Full Tilt $60k Guaranteed for $18k and finally the Full Tilt $50 Cubed for $8,400.

Moorman consistently ranks as one of the premier MTT players in the world and has over $4 million in online earnings. He’s yet to translate that into live winnings, however, with his deepest run being a 12th place finish in the 2010 WSOPE Six-Handed event.
