Poker hits the links at World Series of Golf

Steve Dannenmann

Poker's Steve Dannenmann, Phil Ivey and Russ Hamilton got some fresh air this week as the pro players teed off in the World Series of Golf.

The three-day golf tournament - inspired by the World Series of Poker - got underway Monday at the Primm Valley Golf Club south of Las Vegas.

Dannemann was one of 60 amateur golfers to buy in to the tournament for $10,000 and use poker-style betting for each hole of the game.

"It's a lot like poker in the sense that the whole thing is a game of pressure," he told the Associated Press. "But there are no bad bets on the golf course, until you chunk it."

To play, each participant is placed in a rotation for hitting and betting the round, after anteing $100 of his $10,000. After everyone makes their first shot, the player who led out starts the wagering.

After the first round the player who wins the hole takes the pot or splits it in the event of a tie.

Players can check, bet, raise, or move all in on a really good shot. The goal is to beat your group and not the field.
