Poker game busted in Newfoundland
By Sarah Polson
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary raided an illegal game of Texas Hold'em Tuesday night, arresting three men and seizing money and poker paraphernalia. The RNC expects to arrest more people in relation to the case later.
The three men face 18 charges including operating a common gambling house and being in a common gambling house.
According to RNC Inspector Bob Garland, the game of Texas Hold'em itself isn't illegal, but how the game is played and operated can make it illegal. One of the general rules is that the organizers should not reap any gain from the game.
The RNC has been keeping an eye on Texas Hold'em tournaments. The games have become common in bars and halls around Newfoundland.
A three-week undercover operation had been conducted by the RNC before the bust and arrest took place. The three men arrested so far are scheduled to go to court in December.
