Poker game busted in Georgia, 24 arrested
A Tuesday night poker game in Gainesville, Ga., complete with a complimentary macaroni and cheese buffet, was raided by police last week. Twenty-four people were arrested, more than $13,000 in cash was seized and the buffet, certainly, spoiled.
Most of the 24 were charged with misdemeanor gambling, the Gainesville Times reports, in what a Narcotics Squad agent referred to as "the most organized and sophisticated operation" he's encountered.
The paper reports players paid $100 to enter, and then gambled on Texas Hold'em or Tiger Woods Golf.
The hosts supplied the tables, the chips, baked ham, macaroni and cheese, and rolls. Complimentary beer, liquor and cigars were also supplied, the paper says, although most of the gamblers were reportedly drinking Gatorade. No drugs are reported to have been found on the premises.
On a tip from neighbors, more than 20 deputies, police officers and Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents raided the scene, the paper said, with 24 of the 26 people in attendance arrested and $13,000 in cash seized.
The seven suspected organizers face felony charges of commercial gambling.
