Review

Stewart Reuben, author of acclaimed poker books How Good is Your Pot Limit Hold'em and Pot and No-Limit Hold'em, has just released the autobiographical Poker 24/7. The book takes the reader on a journey through time, from the early 1950's when penny poker was played in small London back-alley clubs to today's mega casinos in Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

Poker 24/7 is first and foremost a well-written autobiography penned by a man who has seen and done it all when it comes to poker. Stewart Reuben has basically lived his entire life playing one form of poker or another, and in the process he has met and played the most influential poker players in the world. The book contains entertaining anecdotes starring some of the biggest names in poker, past and present, including Jack Binion, Mike Sexton, Eric Drache, and Stu Ungar, to name a few. These tales are also the cornerstone of the book and what makes it an interesting read.

Stewart's experiences hobnobbing with the most legendary of poker's elite can be glimpsed in the following excerpt, which describes an occasion when the author and Eric Drache met up with Stu Ungar at a Las Vegas restaurant shortly after Stu won his second World Series of Poker Main Event title and bracelet.

"He was very taken with the fact that his achievement in winning his second bracelet in the 'big one' had received wide attention in England. I also remember his eating part of my bread roll which I had already started, without asking for permission!"

People that have a genuine interest in poker, who enjoy reading about "the good old days" and don't mind picking up a little Trivial Pursuit-style knowledge in the process, will surely delight in this book, provided the reader does not buy it with the intent of becoming a technically better poker player.

Poker 24/7 consists of 23 chapters detailing Stewart Reuben's life in the world of poker (in chronological order) and ends with a note on today's poker world and Internet poker.

The book totals 265 pages, including the index.
