Players alliance recruiting poker-loving senators

By Erin Warner

The Poker Players Alliance is working to convince former U.S. senator Alfonse D'Amato to join the group in decrying the country's ban on Internet gambling.

The card-playing former senator is reportedly in talks with the poker player advocacy group to lobby on behalf of the online gambling industry.

The alliance sought out D'Amato and two other term senators who were well known for enjoying poker, said president Michael Bolcerak. During his three terms as a New York senator, D'Amato reportedly hosted a regular Thursday night poker game in his office.

So far D'Amato hasn't commented on his involvement with the organization. There isn't a firm commitment yet as D'Amato is one of a few people being considered for the job, said Bolcerak.

The former Republican senator has been retired since 1999, when he lost his seat to Democrat Charles Schumer.
