In the photo above we see Phil Ivey standing a few feet away from his table, talking on his cell phone. This was not by choice and unless Ivey can figure out how to sit at the table without using his mobile device, it's something we're going to see a lot of here at the Aussie Millions main event.
Here at the Crown Casino they are very strict about their no cell phone at the table rule and they're not making exceptions, even for Phil Ivey. If you've ever seen Ivey at live tournaments you'll know this poses a serious problem.
Basically every minute that Ivey's not in a hand he's on his phone, either texting or talking. We assume he's talking to bookies, coordinating high-stakes sports bets, chartering private jets and generally orchestrating the baller lifestyle that he's known to enjoy.
When he arrived to take his seat on Day 1A of this event he played one hand, whipped out his cell phone and was immediately handed a five-minute penalty.
Ivey pleaded ignorance to the floor staff but they asserted that he's played here many times and should know the rules by now. Ivey then changed tacks, telling them that it was ridiculous to impose such a rule on him, since he had so much important business to attend to on the phone.
Ivey, not used to being treated like other mere mortals, must have been surprised when they told him he would be held accountable just like every other player in the tournament.
Flabbergasted, Ivey is doing his best to stand up from the table to use his phone but we're pretty sure he's going to rack up some more penalties before this tournament is over.
We'll be keeping an eye on him to see how it works out. Follow along over on our 2011 Aussie Millions live update page!
