Online gambling awareness campaign launched in Germany

By Christopher Hunt

Using powerful slogans like "kein monopol" (no monopoly) and "freies wetten" (freedom to bet), Austrian-listed betting group Bwin has launched an online gambling awareness campaign in Germany, directed at both the public and government officials.

The timing of the campaign coincides directly with a meeting of the prime ministers of the 16 German provinces set to take place Dec. 13, in which they were to debate the "Lotterie-Staatsvertrag," a new document containing regulations critical to the German gaming industry.

The present draft of the Lotterie-Staatsvertrag is quickly facing dissension, with an infringement procedure, initiated by the European Commission, already underway.

It was originally reported the documents were ready to be signed-in, but the process will be delayed until at least next year, as relevant legislation still needs to be passed in the regional parliaments.

The campaign will target a variety of media, and advertising with the above slogans has already begun appearing at German football stadiums.
