The first ever online poker freeroll tournament to offer up a first place prize of $1 million will conclude on the weekend of September 24th at an undisclosed Costa Rican location.
The freeroll, which began on July 1st and ran until August 26th, saw thousands of players compete in 3 free daily heats. Each heat boasted a player turnout of approximately 1,000, with each competitor eligible to win just one seat in the $1 million main event.
The main event was held on August 27th and boasted a field of 3,900 players; the field has now been played down to just 9 final table competitors, all of who will be flown to a five star resort in Costa Rica to play the final table face-to-face. The winner will take home $1 million, the largest prize pool ever offered in an online freeroll tournament, and the top 500 runners up will be offered a share of $150,000 in secondary prizes.
The final table will feature 8 amateur players from across the United States and 1 from the United Kingdom. None of them have ever played poker professionally though many entertain hopes to do just that upon the conclusion of this tournament.
As a result of the staggering success of this massive freeroll event, Paradise Poker is already planning a second freeroll tournament and is currently running heats on the site in anticipation of the next $1 million event.
