RailHeaven goes off; Jepsen ices $500k pot

Peter Jepsen

By Christopher Hunt

High-stakes online No-Limit Hold'em is back - in a big way.

With a lull in high-limit Hold'em action over the last few months, speculation abounded that the highest Hold'em games had all but dried up online.

The general consensus was the games were too tough, the edge too small and that most of the big guns had shifted over to the wild swings and old-school cred of Pot-Limit Omaha.

So when Full Tilt Poker - in the middle of this lull - introduced its highest NL Hold'em table ever, the aptly named $500/$1,000 "RailHeaven," poker fans had their doubts it would ever see any substantial action.

Turns out they were a bit off. And a day like yesterday was likely exactly what Full Tilt had in mind, as a truly epic deep-stack session exploded, highlighted by a $500k pot - second-biggest ever won online - scooped by Danish poker pro Peter Jepsen.

Action was, literally, off the rails from early evening until the small hours of the morning, with dozens of pots over $200k and most of the game's heaviest hitters in on it, including Phil Galfond, Phil Ivey, elmariachimacho, Tom "durrrr" Dwan, Brian Hastings and Hac "trex313" Dang.

The surprise big winner however? Danish mystery man Peter Jepsen.

Known mostly for a win at the EPT3 Polish Open and a deep run at the Caribbean Poker Classic in 2006, where he went by the name of Peter Willy, Jepsen is a somewhat unfamiliar presence at the true nosebleed stakes online.

He's also not exactly one of the first names that pops up when the topic turns to the game's most feared players.

That reputation may have changed for good yesterday, though, as he not only made roughly $300k in profit, he cemented his name in the online poker history books with the monster $499k pot - scooped from none other than one of the game's best, durrrr.

It doesn't hurt when you flop a straight with 9-6 offsuit, but still.

The big pot:
