Online poker records shattered again in Oct.

Tom Dwan
How do you lose $1.4 million in pots and still come out even for the session? Dwan only knows.

By Christopher Hunt

Driven by a surprising traffic upswing and an unexpected lust for high-stakes Hold'em, the repeated smashing of online poker records this Sept. seemed like a bit of a one-off.

An online poker "perfect storm" so to speak, not easily replicated or topped.

Then came October.

Fueled by the launch of a second $500/$1,000 Hold'em table at Full Tilt (dubbed "GusHeaven" and with a reserved seat for Gus Hansen) and another traffic surge across the board, it's clear what the big story in online poker is again this month:

More big-time record-shattering, led by a new standard for biggest pot ever won online at $723,938.

Several impressive online poker marks were hit thoughout Oct. actually, but none more notable than the record-breaking pot just a few days ago on Oct. 26.

Has anyone had a better two months than John Juanda?

Even more than just the one pot, the session surrounding it turned into online poker's biggest night ever with the record for biggest pot broken four times that night, including a $617k pot won by Tom "durrrr" Dwan, a $678k pot won by John Juanda and a $687k pot scooped by Phil Ivey - all capped off by the $723k monster won by Di "Urindanger" Dang.

Unfortunately for Dwan, despite winning one of the ginormous pots, he was actually on the losing end of the top three, including two very sick AA vs. KK coolers.

Amazingly enough, despite taking a shellacking in the huge pots, Dwan still managed to come out even for the session and managed to book a record-breaking Hold'em profit for the month - a solid $1,996,174, putting him easily at the top of the monthly top 100 moneymakers list.

Online Poker Traffic Report

About the only poker room that didn't show an increase in traffic this month, surprisingly, was overall traffic leader PokerStars.

The rest of the top 10 poker rooms seemed to pick up the slack however, with virtually all showing slight to moderate traffic increases, led by Everest Poker's 21% increase to 2,813 cash-game players on average.

Next biggest jump was PartyPoker, rising 15% to 4,915 players. Rounding out the list are UltimateBet (up 10% to 1,312); Full Tilt Poker (up 8% to 8,674 players and including its busiest day of the year so far, with 9,085 players on Wed., Oct. 15); DoylesRoom (up 6% to 1,696); Titan Poker (up 5% to 5,273); Absolute Poker (up 4% to 1,038); and Paradise Poker (up 3% to 1,688).
