Antonius the new RailHeaven fish?

Patrik Antonius
Extended Hold'em downswing making the fanboys doubt their mancrush.
By: Christopher Hunt

He's one of the most celebrated high-stakes pros in the world, with a legion of forum fanboys proclaiming his poker greatness at every turn.

He also clearly feels he has enough edge at high-stakes No-Limit Hold'em to leverage his Full Tilt pro status into a reserved seat at the marquee $500/$1,000 RailHeaven table.

Unfortunately for Patrik Antonius - and for the fanboys - the online Hold'em profit numbers so far in 2008 aren't backing up his fearsome reputation, as the Finnish poker superstar continues to dig himself deeper and deeper into the red.

Variance? Bad play? Hard to say, but Antonius' total Hold'em losses for the year have clearly reached eyebrow-raising status, as he now sits at $1,710,460 in the hole - putting him in some ignominious company and fueling an almost blasphemous forum thread about his Hold'em "suckiness."

The numbers are hard to ignore. Only three other high-stakes players have racked up over $1 million in Hold'em losses so far this year - elmariachimacho, patatino and lady marmelade - and they all happen to be considered the biggest fish in the game.

Has Antonius reached comparable fish status? Probably not.

But given the propensity for all things PA to draw a crowd, the debate will likely rage on in the forums until the downward turn reverses itself.

No great reversal of fortune showed itself for Antonius last night, as he dropped another $42k to put his Hold'em losses for the month at $763,649 - good for fourth place on the overall losers list.

Typical of his ill fortune? The biggest pot he lost last night, to Tom "durrrr" Dwan, when Dwan turned the flush with his 3 5 and happily called Antonius' all-in push.
