New Year brings new poker tour in Great Britain

How would you like to end 2007 as "The Great British Poker Champion?" You can if you take the grand final of the new Great British Poker Tour (GBPT), a televised five-event festival series starting across the U.K. this year.

Hosted by Gala Casinos, the GBPT will ultimately crown the Great British Poker Champion 2007 at the Grand Final in November.

But there's a lot of poker to be played first.

Five qualifying festivals will be held around Britain throughout the year, with the first event happening Feb. 21-25 at the Gala Maybury Casino in Edinburgh.

Each will feature three days of action, including a two-day £500+£50 No-Limit Hold'em main event, to which Gala will also add £5,000. Each main event winner will score a VIP seat at the £500,000 GBPT Grand Final Oct. 29 - Nov. 4.

The winner of the GBPT Grand Final will win an all-expenses-paid trip to the Bellagio Five Diamond World Poker Classic in Las Vegas in Dec. 2007, and the runners-up will get packages to the Aussie Millions and various European Poker Tour events.

Live weekly satellites for the February main event have already started at Gala casinos in Edinburgh and Glasgow, with one seat up for every £550 in buy-ins.

The rest of the events on the schedule are as follows:

  • Apr. 4-8, 2007 - Gala Casino, Teesside
  • May 9-13, 2007 - Gala Casino, Nottingham
  • Jun. 13-17, 2007 - Gala Casino, Bournemouth
  • Aug. 15-19 2007 - Gala Casino, Bradford
