New poker room on horizon for Mohegan Sun

By Christopher Hunt

One of the world's largest casinos, the Mohegan Sun, has revealed plans for a $740 million expansion to be completed by 2010. Among the additions are a new "House of Blues" theme hotel and a 45-table poker room.

The Uncasville, Conn., casino had closed its poker room in 2003 to make room for more slot machines, but with the recent surge in poker popularity, it's now taking the opportunity to incorporate a new room into expansion plans.

The "House of Blues" poker room will be a part of the new 64,000 square foot "Casino of the Wind," set to open in spring of 2008.

Among the other "Project Horizon" additions: a new 1,000-room hotel with 300 "House of Blues" themed hotel rooms, a "House of Blues" Music Hall, and 115,000 square feet of additional retail and restaurant space.

Nearby rival Foxwoods Resort Casino, recent host of the World Poker Tour Season 5 World Poker Finals, has also broken ground on a $700 million expansion that will include more restaurants and nightclubs, convention space and an 825-room hotel.
