New PM rethinking U.K. supercasino
By Sarah Polson
With a change in prime minister in the United Kingdom, so comes a change in the attitude towards the supercasino meant to help revive the economy.
U.K. newspaper the Telegraph reported new PM Gordon Brown dropped a strong hint in the House of Commons today he may be rethinking using gambling to help cities bolster their economies. He said there may be better ways to encourage economic growth in cities such as Manchester.
Manchester was the first to win the bid for a supercasino, which would bring £200 million in investments and 2,700 jobs to the city.
According to the Telegraph, Brown told the Commons that regeneration may be a better way of meeting the economic and social needs of hard-pressed areas than the creation of supercasinos.
That's a complete turnaround from former Prime Minister Tony Blair's attitude, and brought disappointed comments from Manchester's business leaders.
They reiterated that the supercasino would help bring in other private investments to the area to continue to fuel the regeneration of the city.
