New Jersey casinos reopen
By Sarah Polson
Atlantic City's casinos reopened for the gambling public today after the New Jersey governor signed a new budget into law late Sunday night. The city's twelve casinos had been shut down since Wednesday.
The shutdown was a result of the New Jersey state legislature not passing a new budget for 2006-2007 before its July 1 deadline. Without a budget, non-essential government workers were ordered not to work until a new budget was passed.
Some of those non-essential workers were the state casino inspectors, without which the casinos can't operate. It's still unclear if government workers will be paid for their time off. According to union leaders, the 36,000 casino workers who were out of work during the shutdown won't be paid for their forced vacation.
Operations are quickly getting back to normal in Atlantic City, though, as the Borgata Hotel and Casino will give away $250,000 in cash today and tomorrow and will continue the Borgata Summer Poker Open tournament which will run through July 20th.
