GambleAware site calls for responsible wagering
By Erin Warner
A new Web site aimed at helping problem gamblers is warning the public not to make a wager before knowing the facts.
The message is familiar enough, but the medium is brand new. GambleAware is the latest industry resource to offer information and tools to help people gamble responsibly.
The U.K. site launched recently at the hands of several online-gaming supported organizations, government departments and universities.
GambleAware includes tips on responsible gambling, a fact-or-fiction quiz (ex: "Some people are luckier than others"), a time-management diary and a money-management planner. The Web site includes a gambling hotline offered by GamCare, a nonprofit educational resource and training organization.
Other partners who helped create the site include the National Lottery Commission, the Gambling Commission, National Consumer Council, Responsibility in Gambling Trust, Business in Sport and Leisure, the Departments of Health and Culture, Media and Sport, leisure industry group BACTA, and the Universities of Glasgow, Lancaster, Salford and Anglia Ruskin.
Much of the information provided on GambleAware is basic: definitions of terms such as "house edge" and "average return to player," explanations of types of gambling, and the odds of winning at various casino games.
Other sections include information on betting responsibly and tips for managing one's gambling. For those seeking a resource for helping a problem gambler, the site also gives pointers for recognizing a problem and finding help and links to other resources on the Web.
