New chips will help keep poker players' money safe
By Sarah Polson
A poker player might lose a lot of chips because of his play, but one company is hoping to help keep them from losing chips to thieves. Next month, Gaming Partners International Corporation (GPI) will debut new poker chips designed to prevent them from being stolen at casinos.
GPI has come up with an RFID-based Electronic Chip Surveillance (ECS) system that uses tags embedded in the chips that trigger alarms when they're stolen and taken through an electronic sensor gate.
The system combines benefits of the 125 KHz frequency casino currency control with increased security protection against theft.
The ECS system will make its first appearance at the International Casino Exhibition (ICE) in London Jan. 23-25. During the ICE, GPI will also give live demonstrations of many of its RFID products.
All of its lines of RFID chips and readers with various casino currency control and table-management applications will be on display, and the poker table display will feature an embedded reader that can count up 800 chips and calculate both the total value of the pot and the operator's commission.
