Review
"This book is going to show you how to win money at Limit Hold'em, poker's most popular cash game," Mark Karowe and Johnny Chan write in the introduction to Million Dollar Hold'em: Limit Cash Games. And it may be true.
Johnny Chan and Mark Karowe are both well respected poker players, though Chan is by far the best known. After winning a plethora of World Series of Poker bracelets and being immortalized in the movie Rounders, he is now one of the most respected and well-known players in the world.
The book begins by telling the story of Chan's start in poker. But it also introduces some of the important factors to consider when playing the game, such as seating, table selection and limits. The introduction lasts for the first 40 pages, and then the hand practice section takes over. The practice hands take up the bulk of the book, and this part is what makes it worth buying. The hands are theoretical plays mixed with real life hands played by the authors and come with plenty of advice.
Every hand is centered around key concepts; for example, it explains how best to play JJ in the small blind and exemplifies techniques for certain situations. The graphic illustrations are good and the text is easy to read and understand. Many books pile on example after example and tend to become repetitive and boring. In this book, however, Chan and Karowe's well-written advice and explanation of the plays keep each new hand interesting and engaging.
Million Dollar Hold'em is a great companion for anyone playing Limit Hold'em. The book is relatively easy to read and the examples are relevant. To get the full use out of the book, readers should have general knowledge of Limit Hold'em and know the basic math behind odds and outs in poker.
The book consists of 11 sections including an introduction, a chapter on environment and nine sections containing practice hands.
The book totals 368 pages including introduction, appendix and glossary.
