Mike Hauptman wins big at Bellagio
By Erik Sylven
Mike Hauptman took home the biggest event so far at the World Poker Classic, $5,000 No-Limit Texas Hold'em. The poker amateur walked away with $365,995 in prize money, a championship bracelet and a seat in the World Poker Tour (WPT) Championship.
A number of experienced pros, including James Van Alstyne, Nam Le, and John Gale, entered the tournament at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, but none of them managed to get very far.
Instead, Mike Hauptman fought his way through the 195 man strong starting field to win his first major title.
Hauptman took command of the tournament when he hit a flush to double through Brian Rast, who was knocked out a few minutes later in third place. He then defeated David "Vifter" Peat heads-up to take home the title and the $365,995 first prize.
Final results from Event 5, $5,000 No-Limit Texas Hold'em:
