Mattar Steals Thunder, Ronaldo Out w/ 24 Left in PCA Main Event

Ronaldo repped hard but Mattar (back to us, foreground) emerged.

For most of Day 4 today at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas, all eyes were focused squarely on the every move of Brazilian icon Ronaldo.

Playing under the lights of the feature table and the buzz of the online live stream, the three-time FIFA World Player of the Year faced a new pressure unlike what he's seen on the pitch.

In the end it clearly wore the superstar down and, after an up-and-down day that saw him top 1m chips briefly, Brazil's newest poker hero finally busted from the 2015 PCA main event in 26th.

In his stead at the top of the chip counts: countryman Eugenio Mattar, who just happens to be the 144th richest person in Brazil.

Moving to the feature table towards the end of Day 4 play Mattar stole some of Ronaldo's thunder when he took the last of his chips near the end of level 23.

Visibly tired from the day's play Ronaldo opened from middle position with K T. Mattar bumped it to 200k and Ronaldo shoved only to see Mattar turn over QQ.

No help came from the board and that was all for Ronaldo, who left with newfound respect earned for his poker stamina and $42,180 for his first career cash.

Mattar, meanwhile, took the 500k from Ronaldo and bumped his stack up to 2.6m to end the night for the chip lead with 24 players left heading into Day 5.

Also topping the 2m mark were France's Emrah Cakmak and American Chance Kornuth.

Former Scripps National Spelling Bee Champ Pratyush Buddiga is in the top 5 with 1.6m and Shyam "s_dot111" Srinivasan, who went deep here last year, is also in the Top 10. The current chip leaders:

  • 1 Eugenio Pacelli Mattar 2,673,000
  • 2 Emrah Cakmak 2,037,000
  • 3 Chance Kornuth 2,026,000
  • 4 Andreas Samuelsson 1,628,000
