March High Stakes Recap: Galfond Edges Hansen

Phil Galfond
Phil "OMGClayAiken" Galfond

It was close but Phil “OMGClayAiken” Galfond narrowly beat out Gus Hansen as the top online winner in March.

Hansen has dominated 2011 and took top honors in both January and February. He looked primed to top March as well but a streaking Galfond beat the Great Dane in several pivotal sessions and ended up winning $1.75 million overall.

It was just a slim $50,000 more than Hansen earned in March but it was enough to finally dethrone the Team Full Tilt Pro.

The rest of the top five winners of March looked like a murderer’s row of elite poker players with Dan “jungleman12” Cates and Phil Ivey represented.

There were some surprises in the top five biggest losers leaderboard, however, with fan favorites Tom “durrrr” Dwan and Viktor “Isildur1” Blom both losing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Here’s a look at the top five biggest winners and losers for the month of March. For more information be sure to check our online poker stats section. All results below are from Full Tilt unless otherwise mentioned.

Top 5 Biggest Winners

1. Phil “OMGClayAiken” Galfond: +$1.75 million

Phil “OMGClayAiken” Galfond was down $1.1 million heading into March but went on absolute tear winning a total of $1.75 million.

One of his biggest sessions actually came in the last week of March when he was able to win $568k playing PLO against Scott “URnotINdanger2” Palmer, Gus Hansen and Van Marcus.

Galfond, who’s always been an exceptionally consistent online player, is now up over $600k this year.

2. Gus Hansen: +$1.7 million

Gus Hansen may have lost a bit of cash to Phil Galfond in March but that didn’t keep the Great Dane from still winning close to $2 million.

Hansen has owned 2011 and March was no exception with big wins against Scott Palmer, NoParasan and Dan “jungleman12” Cates.

Hansen is now up to an astounding $4.3 million in 2011. Considering Dan “jungleman12” Cates earned $5.5 in all of 2010, it’s an impressive figure to say the least.

3. Phil Ivey: +$901,000

Phil Ivey did what he does best in the month of March: win.

The Team Full Tilt Pro only played 4,488 hands in March but he still found a way to win $901,000 and become the third biggest winner of the month.

Widely considered the best overall poker player, Ivey has yet to record a losing year online and since he’s already up $1.1 million in 2011 there’s a good chance he won’t start this year.

4. Gavin “gavz101” Cochrane: +$816,000 (PokerStars)

Gavin “gavz101” Cochrane was the sole winner on PokerStars to crack the top five overall winners.

For the last month gavz101 has been taking all challengers on PokerStars and recorded some huge wins against high stakes regulars Viktor “Isildur1” Blom and compris.

Cochrane, who is a former SCOOP winner, is now up to $1.8 million in online poker this year and is the biggest winner on PokerStars.

5. Dan “jungleman12” Cates: +$747,000

Dan “jungleman12” Cates was last year’s biggest winner with $5.5 million and after a rocky start in 2011, he’s back to his winning ways with $747k in the month of March.

Cates played numerous players in $200/$400 and higher PLO but was also helped by booking several wins in the durrrr Challenge 2 against Tom “durrrr” Dwan.

Jungleman12 is now up to $1.9 million in profit this year.

Top 5 Biggest Losers

1. Scott “URnotINdanger2” Palmer: -$990,000

March was not a good month for Scott “URnotINdanger2” Palmer on Full tilt.

The Maryland-resident seemed to lose in nearly every session he played and after playing 19,044 hands in March found himself down $990,000.

Palmer lost some huge sessions against Gus Hansen early in the month and never really recovered.

To make matters worse Palmer also lost $206k on his urnotindangr account on PokerStars. If you combine both the accounts, Palmer lost over $1 million in March.

Tom Dwan
Tom "durrrr" Dwan

2. Tom “durrrr” Dwan: -$907,000

Tom Dwan, who has been amongst the biggest winners over the last few years of online poker, has not been near as dominant in 2011 and March was no exception.

Dwan played 11,333 hands and dropped $907k to players such as jungleman12 and even upstart XWINK at one point.

Dwan is now down nearly $2 million this year and is also down $1.2 million in the durrrr Challenge 2. It’s time for the New Jersey poker prodigy to turn it around.

3. Viktor “Isildur1” Blom: -$888,000 (PokerStars)

Viktor “Isildur1” Blom, like durrrr, was once heralded as the best high stakes online poker player in the world but has also fallen on rough times.

After finally getting nearly even in 2011, Blom had an awful March losing huge sessions to PokerStars regs like gavz101 and PepperoniF.

Despite winning five of the seven SuperStar Showdowns that have been held, Isildur1 is still down $383k in 2011.

4. FishosaurusREX: -$685,000

FishosaurusRex lost a staggering $2 million in February and he certainly didn’t rebound in March.

Rumored to be chess player Eugene Yanayt, FishosarusREX peaked at $2 million in profit in late January but has since lost nearly every session he’s played.

Now down a total of $1.5 million, it’s questionable how much more the account can take.

5. kagome kagome: -$597,000

Online poker pros have been known to be superstitious about changing their screennames and the person behind the kagome kagome account certainly has a right to be.

After dominating as IHateJuice, kagome kagome has been terrible since switching names on Full Tilt.

The kagome kagome handle lost nearly $600k in March alone and is down $1.6 million this year.
