Jennifer Tilly’s huge chip stack and a marathon heads-up match between Dan O’Brien and Giovanni Rosadoni highlighted another day of action the 2012 WSOPE.
Tilly hit the top of the chip counts on Day 1 of the Mix-Max event while O’Brien and Rosadoni were locked in a heads-up match that went until 5 a.m. at the Shootout final table.
Earlier in the day Roger Hairabedian become the first French player to win a bracelet since the WSOPE moved to Cannes.
Here’s a look at the two events that continued after Hairabedian’s historic victory:
O’Brien, Rosadoni Deadlocked in Event 4 €3k Shootout Final
Noted pro Dan O’Brien will have to wait another day for a shot at his first WSOP bracelet.
O’Brien had opponent Giovanni Rosadoni on the ropes at one point during their heads-up match with 1 million chips to Rosadoni’s 185,000 but the Italian fought back and had secured the chip lead by the time play ended.
The pair will resume play tomorrow at 3 p.m. local time with Rosadoni holding 787,000 chips to O’Brien’s 490,000.
The final table began with 19 players chasing a shiny new bracelet including Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth, John Monnette, Dominik Nitsche and John Duthie.
Big-timers Hellmuth and Negreanu both fell short of the final table coming 12th and 16th respectively.
The final table did include John Duthie, Oleksii Kovalchuk and John Monnette, who interestingly was still alive in his bid for 2012 WSOP POY.
Monnette ended up finishing in third place, which wasn’t quite enough to give him the POY lead.
Here’s a look the final table payouts (except for O’Brien and Rosadoni obviously):
- 3. John Monnette – €107,614
- 4. Oleksii Kovalchuk – €35,560
- 5. Adrien Allain – €26,724
- 6. Paul Guichard – €20,434
- 7. Roman Romanovskyi – €15,890
- 8. Trond Aanensen – €12,564
- 9. John Duthie – €10,095
Tilly, Mizrachi Lead Way on Day 1 of Event 5 €10k Mixed Max
Poker celeb Jennifer Tilly bagged 218,500 chips to finish as the chip leader on Day 1 of the pro-heavy €10,450 Mixed No-Limit Hold’em Event.
Faraz Jaka, Marvin Rettenmaier, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, TV producer Mori Eskandani and last year’s winner Michael Mizrachi also finished among the top 10 chip counts.
A total of 96 players entered the contest, which was down significantly from the 125 players who came out last year, but was enough to create a €921,000 prize pool with €258,047 set aside for first place.
Tilly got lucky in the early stages of the day to eliminate PokerStars pro Eugene Katchalov with a set of jacks over his set of eights. Tilly never looked back and by the end of the day she had nearly twice the stack of her nearest competitor.
By the end of the day the field had been reduced to 59 players with Daniel Negreanu, Steve O’Dwyer, Kyle Julius and Todd Terry among the 39 players who were eliminated.
Play resumes in Event 5 at 2 p.m. (CET) tomorrow.
