Review
Machiavellian Poker Strategy: How to Play Like a Prince and Rule the Poker Table is the second book from David Apostolico that applies classic writings to the world of poker. In the first, he explored how to use the classic war strategies of Sun Tzu in the game of poker to gain edge and achieve the mindset of a warrior. In this book, Apostolico takes on the classic The Prince by Machiavelli, applying its principles to the poker table.
Just as in his previous book, Machiavellian Poker Strategy mixes poker strategy with excerpts from the classic text, weaving the two together to create a guide to the right mindset and actions for a successful poker game. This book - as opposed to the first - applies to all poker games, not just tournament play.
The book shows how to adopt the outlook of a powerful leader, defend and protect your assets, play whole situations, extract the maximum of chips in a hand and play with discipline, all the while referencing The Prince.
Machiavellian Poker Strategy is well written and may give a new perspective on poker by incorporating the writings of an old master. For most readers, however, it will probably feel like the hard way of learning some new poker skills. Buy this book if you are a reader and liked Apostolico's first book, or if you want to mix a little classic literature in with your poker prose. Otherwise, there are more to-the-point poker books out there.
The book consists of 11 chapters titled:
- Si Guarda al Fine
- Be a Prince
- Virtue
- Fortune
- Free Will
- Power
- Statesmanship
- Human Nature
- The Art of War
- Maxims
- Machiavellian Tournament Strategy
The book totals 165 pages including a score introduction and glossary.
