Macau Poker Cup Sets Records Again
The Macau Poker Cup at the PokerStars Macau poker room inside the Casino Grand Lisboa continued to break records in Macau, China this weekend.
The cup earned its label as Asia's premiere poker series drawing 1,579 players and awarding HKD $7,780,280 in prize money over six featured tournaments Feb. 21-27.
Mark Benasa became the first Filipino player to win the Red Dragon main event, grabbing the title and HKD $1,100,000 after getting the better of a massive 509-player field.
The event filled the poker room to capacity on the first two starting days smashing the previous attendance record of 321 players.
The HKD $3,000,000 guarantee was rendered moot as an HKD $5,090,000 prize pool was created.
The final table was cake walk for Benasa, who sent 4 players to the rail before beating 2010 APPT Cebu winner Young-Shin Im heads-up.
"This is my first major live poker win" said Benasa. "I'm used to playing 20-30 tables online, but it's amazing how much adrenaline you can get from a single live table. I'm honored (to be the first Filipino Red Dragon winner) and will definitely be back to play all the PokerStars Macau events."
In the meantime, China's Yang Sun picked up HKD $198,510 winning a $5k side event that drew an event-record 182 players.
And, Malaysia's Christine Hia won HKD $13,899 taking down the Ladies event.
