Liz Lieu lends celebrity to women's charity

Poker diva Liz Lieu has made her bankroll on the felt and now she's shipping it to those less fortunate through her involvement with charitable organization Women In Need (WIN).

The foundation is designed to help empower and heal women and will be - along with charities to help the poor of Vietnam - the focus of Lieu's volunteer work.

"I know what it's like to go through incredibly tough times and have to basically start life over," Lieu wrote on her online journal after announcing her involvement with WIN.

"This is an organization that helps women do that, and I couldn't be prouder to endorse them," she said. "What they do is close to my heart, and after some long conversations with them, I know that this is something I wanted and needed to be involved in."

WIN offers programs to help women recover from abuse in seven outreach centers across the U.S., as well as one in Athens, Greece.

Other initiatives from the organization include empowerment and self-esteem classes, plus a program to education college-age girls about alcohol-related abuse.

For her part, Lieu plans to draw media attention to WIN with her celebrity status as a poker player. She will also donate a percentage of her tournament winnings and contribute her free time to raise money and awareness for the foundation.

Lieu was introduced to the organization through her friend, LynnPhuong Frazier, a former Miss Virginia Globe 2006. The beauty pageant is an annual fundraiser for WIN and the poker pro will be one of this year's judges for the event.
