Liz Lieu beats Erik Sagstrom at the Venetian
By Lianne Elias
Liz Lieu beat Erik Sagstrom in heads-up play this past weekend in a $600,000 freezeout series consisting of three $200,000 matches at the Venetian poker room in Las Vegas. Lieu, widely considered one of the best female players on the professional circuit, challenged Sagstrom, a top Internet player known online by his alias, Erik 123, to a match after he called her a fish during an online game.
Playfully entitled "Beauty vs. The Beast," the two pros arranged the details of the series during the World Poker Tour (WPT) World Championship at the Bellagio Hotel & Casino last month, and proposed the idea to the poker room staff and promotional team at the Venetian.
The two pros began play on Friday, May 5 and concluded their series on Sunday, May 7. The matches boasted a $2,000 - $4,000 limit structure. The first and second rounds saw Lieu and Sagstrom tied 1-1, with Lieu ultimately defeating her opponent after inflicting a number of bad beats on him.
