$10K PLO: Ben Lamb Wins to Redeem His Near Miss

Ben Lamb
Ben Lamb finished 2nd last week, but 1st this week.

A week ago, Ben Lamb was at a WSOP final table playing heads-up for a pot-limit omaha bracelet, but he finished second to Sam Stein.

The experience didn't seem to discourage him, because today he was at a WSOP final table playing heads-up for a pot-limit omaha bracelet against Sami Kelopuro.

Only this time, Lamb came out victorious in the final hand.

Ben Lamb wins his first WSOP bracelet, along with $814,436. Combined with the $260,000 or so that he won last week, Lamb becomes the first player at this year's WSOP to earn more than $1 million ($1,074,354).

Sami Kelopuro
Sami Kelopuro battled the stacks back to even.

HEADS-UP PLAY

When heads-up play began, Lamb had a 3-to-2 chip lead over Sami Kelopuro, and quickly increased it to a 2-to-1 chip lead.

But Kelopuro battled back, winning a big pot with a wheel straight and picking up a few smaller pots to effectively even the counts. Kelopuro even took a slight lead at one point. It was definitely anybody's match.

THE FINAL HAND

In the final hand, they saw a flop of A 9 3. Lamb checked, Kelopuro bet, and Lamb called.

The turn card was the Q, and that's when the action happened.

Lamb checked, Kelopuro bet big, and Lamb raised the size of the pot. Kelopuro paused briefly before moving all in, and Lamb quickly called.

Ben Lamb: 6 5 4 2
Sami Kelopuro: A K Q 7

Kelopuro had top two pair with aces and queens, while Lamb had a big straight draw and a spade flush draw.

Lamb needed to catch a five, a four, a deuce, or any spade to win the bracelet. Any other card and Kelopuro would double up to a massive chip lead.

The river card was the 5.

Lamb completed his five-high straight and his friends on the rail mobbed him in celebration. Kelopuro could only stand at the table and think about what might have been.

Sami Kelopuro vs Ben Lamb

Congratulations to bracelet-winner Ben Lamb!

1st: Ben Lamb - $814,436
2nd: Sami Kelopuro - $503,173

$10K PLO: Ben Lamb vs. Sami Kelopuro

Final Four
The final four playing for the bracelet.

The $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha event is down to the final two, as heads-up play begins between Ben Lamb and Sami Kelopuro.

Here's how it happened:

CHRISTOPHER KING OUT IN 4th PLACE

Christopher King was down to about 1.1 million in chips when he got it all in preflop against Ben Lamb.

Ben Lamb: K K 8 4
Christopher King: A A K Q

With aces over kings (and another king in his hand), King was the favorite, and Lamb's friends on the rail were cheering for diamonds.

The board came 10 6 3 5 4, and Lamb flopped a diamond flush to win the pot. King appeared to be stunned when he saw the all-diamond flop.

Christopher King
Christopher King had his aces cracked by, you guessed it ... diamonds.

Christopher King was eliminated in fourth place, earning $273,575.

JOHN SHIPLEY OUT IN 3rd PLACE

John Shipley was solidly in second place, when Sami Kelopuro got it all in preflop against him.

John Shipley: Q J J 10
Sami Kelopuro: K K 9 5

The board came 8 6 4 3 8, and the pocket kings held up for Kelopuro to win the pot and double up to 3.2 million.

That knocked Shipley down to about 800,000, or just 8 big blinds.

A few minutes later, Shipley got it all in preflop against Kelopuro, trying to get his chips back.

John Shipley
John Shipley was doing alright before those two hands against Sami Kelopuro.

Sami Kelopuro: K Q J 8
John Shipley: A K 8 5

The board came Q 10 5 2 7, and Kelopuro paired his queen on the flop to win the pot.

After two hands against Sami Kelopuro, John Shipley was eliminated in third place, earning $369,575.

HEADS-UP PLAY BEGINS

Ben Lamb
Ben Lamb: "The chip lead is nice, but I want that bracelet."

The no-more-than-10-levels-a-day rule kicked in for the $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Championship with four players remaining, so there will be no bracelet won here tonight.

The final four players will return tomorrow (Monday) at 3:00 pm to continue their battle in front of what we expect will be a much larger crowd.

Here are the official chip counts for the final four, with blinds at 50,000-100,000:

John Kabbaj was eliminated in sixth place, earning $153,517.

DARIO ALIOTO OUT IN 5th PLACE

After a flop of K 8 5, Dario Alioto was all in against Sami Kelopuro:

Sami Kelopuro: A A 4 3

$10K PLO: Dario Alioto Leads the Final Six

Dario Alioto
Alioto is the sole survivor of Day 2's 5-way preflop all in.

The final table of the $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Championship is down to the final six players, and Dario Alioto tops the leaderboard.

The average chip stack only has 30 big blinds, and since this is PLO, there have been some chip swings.

How much longer until the 10-level hard stop is reached? Well, the current level (Level 27) is about half over, and then they will play the full hour of Level 28. At that point, they will stop for the night -- unless they miraculously reach a bracelet winner before then.

HANS WINZELER OUT IN 9th PLACE

In a blind-vs.-blind situation, Hans Winzeler was all in preflop against Christopher King.

Christopher King: Q Q 10 6
Hans Winzeler: A 9 6 2

The board came Q 9 7 7 2, and King flopped a set of queens and turned a full house to win the pot.

Hans Winzeler, who finished runner-up to Jason Mercier in a PLO event less than a week ago, was eliminated in ninth place, earning $$68,410.

JOSH TIEMAN OUT IN 8th PLACE

After a flop of K Q 7, Josh Tieman was all in against John Shipley.

Josh Tieman
Josh Tieman finished 8th today, but won a WSOP bracelet last year.

John Shipley: K K 7 4
Josh Tieman: A 10 9 8

Tieman had a gutshot straight draw with an ace-high flush draw, while Shipley flopped a set of kings.

The turn was the A, the river was the 6, and Tieman never improved. Shipley won the pot with his set of kings.

Josh Tieman was eliminated in eighth place, earning $88,873.

CORY WOOD OUT IN 7th PLACE

Cory Wood was all in preflop against Dario Alioto.

Dario Alioto: Q-Q-9-8
Cory Wood: A-K-Q-J (two spades)

The board came 8 3 2 7 5, and Wood never improved beyond a flush draw. Alioto won the pot with his pocket queens.

$10K PLO: Ben Lamb Leads the Final 11

Ben Lamb
After time in the cellar, Ben Lamb tops the leaderboard again.

Ben Lamb was the overnight chipleader, and held the lead a couple of times earlier today. But after the dinner break, he took some hits, and dropped to second-to-last in the chip counts.

That was then, this is now.

Ben Lamb has climbed out of the cellar and into the chip lead, becoming the first player to reach the 2 million-chip mark.

Most recently, Lamb picked up a pot worth nearly 1 million in chips by checking down to the river against Cory Wood.

Board: 5 4 3 3 K

Lamb check-raised big on the river, and Wood called to see Lamb turn over A K K 7 for a full house, kings full of threes. Wood mucked, while Lamb pulled in a huge pot.

Justin Schwartz
Justin Schwartz: Chipleader at dinner, out by midnight. Ouch.

JUSTIN SCHWARTZ OUT IN 13th PLACE

Justin Schwartz, who was the dinner-break chipleader with 17 players left, was just eliminated after a tortuous post-dinner period.

Schwartz's stack dropped down quite a bit, and was just starting to rebound when he got Matt Glantz all in on the turn against him.

Board: A Q 9 4

Justin Schwartz: A 9 9 6
Matt Glantz: A J 10 4

Both players had a heart flush draw, but Schwartz had the higher one. Schwartz also had the lead with a set of nines to Glantz's pair of aces.

Glantz's only live draw was his open-ended straight draw.

The river card was the K, and Glantz won the pot with a king-high straight to double up.

That knocked Schwartz down to about 4 big blinds, and he was eliminated by Josh Tieman a few minutes after Level 25 began.

Michael Weyer
Michael Weyer finished in 12th place.

MICHAEL WEYER OUT IN 12TH PLACE

Michael Weyer was all in preflop against Sami Kelopuro.

Sami Kelopuro: J J 10 9
Michael Weyer: K K Q 7

The board came Q J 6 9 6, and Kelopuro flopped a set of jacks and rivered a full house (jacks full of sixes) to win the pot.

Michael Weyer was eliminated in 12th place.

UPDATED CHIP COUNTS

Here is an updated look at the leaderboard with 11 players remaining and the blinds at 25,000-50,000:

1. Ben Lamb - 2,010,000 (40 bb)
2. John Shipley - 1,315,000 (26 bb)
3. Benjamin Kaupp - 1,275,000 (25 bb)
4. Christopher King - 1,230,000 (24 bb)
5. Sami Kelopuro - 1,150,000 (23 bb)
6. Josh Tieman - 800,000 (16 bb)
6. Cory Wood - 800,000 (16 bb)
8. Dario Alioto - 675,000 (13 bb)
9. John Kabbaj - 625,000 (12 bb)
10. Hans Winzeler - 525,000 (10 bb)
11. Matt Glantz - 490,000 (9 bb)

12th Place: Michael Weyer - $53,072
13th Place: Justin Schwartz - $41,637
14th Place: Felipe Ramos - $41,637

The average chip stack is less than 20 big blinds, so it shouldn't be long before the next player busts. When there are 10 players left, they will move to the ESPN main stage to play out the rest of tonight.

The no-more-than-10-levels-per-day rule should kick in around 3:30 pm.

ALEXANDER KRAVCHENKO OUT IN 17th PLACE

After a flop of K 10 6, Alexander Kravchenko was all in against Matt Glantz.

Alexander Kravchenko
Alexander Kravchenko finished 8th in this event last year.

Matt Glantz: K J 10 7
Alexander Kravchenko: A A 7 6

Tristan Clemencon was all in preflop against Justin Schwartz.

Justin Schwartz: A J 9 7
Tristan Clemencon: Q Q J 2

$10K PLO: Sam Stein Busts; Final 17 Break For Dinner

Sam Stein
Stein was going for two bracelets, but fell short.

There are 17 players remaining at the dinner break (play will resume around 8:30 pm), and the odds of reaching a bracelet winner tonight are quickly shrinking to zero.

Sam Stein will not be winning his second WSOP bracelet in this event. He was part of a three-way pot that resulted in a double-elimination.

SAM STEIN & JARED BLEZNICK ELIMINATED BY MATT GLANTZ

Sam Stein and Jared Bleznick were all in preflop against Matt Glantz. Here are their cards in descending order of chip counts:

Matt Glantz: Q 10 8 7
Jared Bleznick: A A 7 4
Sam Stein: K K J J

Bleznick had pocket aces to Stein's pocket kings to Glantz's double-suited hand with great straight possibilities.

Matt Glantz
Matt Glantz busted two players on the same hand.

The board came 7 4 2 6 A, and Glantz won the pot with a queen-high club flush to bust both players on the same hand.

As the shorter stack, Sam Stein was eliminated in 24th place, while Jared Bleznick was eliminated in 23rd place.

$10K PLO: More Names Fall as Ben Lamb Builds Lead

Ben Lamb
Lamb leads the field with more than a million in chips.

Shortly after their first break of the day in the $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Championship, the field is down to 25 players at the final three tables.

They will move to the ESPN main stage when they reach the final 10, but the odds are against them playing all the way to a bracelet today.

Sam Stein, who won a PLO bracelet a week ago, is still alive with an average stack as he tries to become the first player to win multiple bracelets at the 2011 WSOP. Though that honor could go to Eugene Katchalov, who is currently chipleader with nine left at the $1,500 Limit Hold'em final table.

Michael McDonald
The clock ran out for Timex. (Ouch, that hurt to write.)

MIKE McDONALD OUT IN 32nd PLACE

Back to the PLO championship, several notable players have already fallen. Mike McDonald got all his chips in preflop against Cory Wood.

Cory Wood: K K J 9
Mike McDonald: A A Q 2

McDonald had the preflop lead with double-suited pocket aces, but the board favored Wood:

K 8 4 4 9

Wood flopped a set of kings and turned a full house to win the pot and bust Mike "Timex" McDonald in 32nd place.

MAX PESCATORI OUT IN 27th PLACE

Remember when Max Pescatori wore the Italian flag as a pirate-style handkerchief-hat, and was known as the "Italian Pirate"? Well, he dresses a bit more traditionally nowadays.

Regardless, he's busted out of this event, all in preflop against Christopher King:

Max Pescatori
Some of us miss the Italian Pirate, Max.

Christopher King: Q Q J 10
Max Pescatori: Q J 10 9

The board missed them both, falling 6 5 4 4 5, and King won the pot with his pocket queens.

Max Pescatori was eliminated in 27th place.

WILL FAILLA OUT IN 26th PLACE

Will "The Thrill" Failla started the day sixth in chips, and started off on a hot streak to build his stack even higher. But ever since the money bubble burst, Failla has been on a downswing.

At the break, Failla was below 100,000 in chips. Shortly after play resumed, Failla got it all in preflop against Jared Bleznick.

$10K PLO: Humberto Brenes & Jyri Merivirta Bubble

Humberto Brenes
Humberto Brenes bubbled the money bubble.

It took about 40 minutes to eliminate two players and burst the money bubble here on Day 3.

Humberto Brenes was the first to go, all in after the flop against both Will Failla and Benjamin Kaupp, who checked the rest of the hand down.

Board: 10 3 2 3 8

Benjamin Kaupp: K K 10 2
Will Failla: mucked
Humberto Brenes: A K 9-X

Kaupp flopped two pair (tens and deuces), but improved to kings and threes on the turn to win the pot. Brenes was left with ace high, and was eliminated in 38th place.

Felipe Ramos
Everyone can thank Felipe Ramos for busting the bubble boy.

HAND-FOR-HAND PLAY

With 37 players left, the field began hand-for-hand play, and there were a couple of double-ups in that time.

Eventually, Jyri Merivirta got it all in against Felipe Ramos after a flop of A 10 8.

Felipe Ramos: K K Q 7
Jyri Merivirta: 9 6 4 3

Ramos was ahead with a pair of kings and a gutshot straight draw, while

Merivirta had a gutshot straight draw with a nine-high flush draw, but Ramos was ahead with a pair of kings, a different gutshot straight draw, and a higher queen-high flush draw.

The turn was the 2, the river was the J, and Ramos won the pot with an ace-high straight to eliminate Merivirta as the unfortunate bubble boy in 37th place.

MONEY FINISHERS

Since the bubble burst, there have already been a few more eliminations as players finally get something in return.

34th: Florian Langmann - $20,699
35th: Ludovic Lacay - $20,699
36th: Surinder Sunar - $20,699

37th: Jyri Merivirta - $0
38th: Humberto Brenes - $0

The next pay jump will be $25,891 for the top 27 players (the final three tables).
