Williams Wins Whole Enchilada!

Bracelet
Yeah... it's D-Dub's

Almost as quickly as it began, the heads up match is officially over.

In a hand that was packed full of drama, it started when David Williams opened for a half a million and was shoved into by Eric Baldwin for 4.7 million total.

Williams made the call and turned over his pocket deuces. As we know, deuces are at best a coin flip against the vast majority of hands. Baldwin turned over his A 5 and they were off to the races.

The entire audience got on their feet and craned their necks to see what the dealer would produce. It was the A 6 7!

Baldwin had pulled ahead and taken a commanding lead.

His cheering section went wild. It appeared as though he was going to win this hand and bring the stacks nearly even.

But not so fast - the announcer gave the dealer the directive to burn and turn. He did so and flipped over the 2!

Baldwin's cheering section looked almost as stunned as Eric himself. The other side of the room hollered like a mob of unruly soccer of fans with Williams' mom perhaps the loudest of the bunch. The turn card heard round the world, it left Baldwin drawing dead.

He took the gut wrenching beat in stride and walked over to give Williams a hearty handshake.

Eric Baldwin has proven that he has what it takes to win and we're sure someday we'll see him on the WPT podium. He will have to settle for second place money of $1,034,715, pretty good for a week of work.

Tonight, however, it is all about David Williams. It took him four WPT Final Tables to secure a win and he managed to do it in arguably the toughest tournament field on the schedule. For his $25,000 investment he will take home $1,530,537 - not a bad return on investment.

So there you have it - David Williams wins the 2010 WPT World Championship.

Thanks for following along and make sure to come back soon as we head to Monte Carlo to cover some of the sickest European action to ever grace the felt.

And Then There Were Two

David Williams
One time?

So here we are ladies and gentlemen. A week ago 195 players anted up the $25k to participate in this World Championship and now only two remain.

David Williams has already been to his fair share of WPT final tables but still has yet to close the deal. He's going into the heads up match with 15.1 million in chips.

Eric Baldwin has his work cut out for him. His 4.4 million looks tiny compared to Williams' stack but don't let the numbers fool you. Baldwin only needs to double up two times and the title will be his.

The crowd is in there cheering as we type this. The heads up battle is about to begin.

Shorn Buchanan

Always smiling in good times and bad.

Tom "Durrrr" Dwan entered the tournament area and the crowd went wild - but the cheers were not for him.

He came in just as David Williams had gotten all in against Shawn Buchanan preflop. The skirmish between the two chip giants began when David Williams raised it from the button to 500,000.

Buchanan made it 2.2 million to go and Williams came back over the top for a few million more. Buchanan called all in and tabled pocket queens. Williams turned over pocket nines. Oops.

No matter though, sometimes getting in as a 4-1 dog isn't too bad if you plan on flopping a set which is exactly what D-Dub did. The dealer rolled over the 9 2 J. Now it was Buchanan who needed to get lucky by snagging one of the two remaining queens.

The dealer burned and turned the 4 followed by a useless (for Buchanan) 6.

Buchanan's crowd had been the loudest so far but they could do nothing but listen to Williams' cheering section go wild as Shawn smiled and shook hands with his opponents.

Au Revoir Monsieur Benyamine

David Benyamine
Don't forget your passport.

The blinds are huge now making the player's decisions easy. It's either shove or fold time.

It folded over to David Benyamine in the small blind who shoved into Shawn Buchanan's big blind. Buchanan had Benyamine barely covered so it was a big decision for the Canadian. He dug deep into his soul and found a call.

Buchanan turned over A 5. Benyamine looked a little bewildered and turned over his Q J.

Buchanan stood and watched as the dealer rolled over the 7 2 9. The 5 turn paired up Buchanan but was essentially a blank.

Down to one card, Benyamine didn't look too optimistic. The dealer rapped the table and flipped over the 7.

Benyamine was out of chips and out of luck. He told PL.com yesterday that he was planning to head to Monte Carlo to join in some of the EPT fun. If he hurries, maybe he can catch a flight tonight.

While Benyamine headed off to get his $329,228 for fourth place, the three remaining players prepared to continue. The next player out will be the last to leave the final table without at least a million dollars.

Williams Falters Against Baldwin

David Williams
No longer smiling.

David Williams has apparently found his nemesis in Eric Baldwin.

Williams can't stop donating chips to the young UB pro.

This time around it was a pure coinflip with Baldwin getting all his chips in the middle with Q Q and Williams holding A K.

The board ran out Q 9 9 7 4 and the flopped pair of queens was enough to give Baldwin the checkmark.

Williams looked stern as Baldwin stacked his new-found chips.

Baldwin is up to 3.7 million while Williams falls down to 8.3 million.

Perhaps this isn't over yet.

Baldwin Survives Through Williams

Eric Baldwin
Put your hat back on.

Shortly after donating most of his stack to Shawn Buchanan, Eric Baldwin found a double up against David Williams.

Baldwin open-shoved for 770,000 and Williams moved in over-the-top with his giant 11 million stack to isolate.

Benyamine quickly got out of the way and Baldwin flipped A 5 to Williams' Q J.

Desperate to win the hand Baldwin got lucky when the flop came A 9 8 to make a pair of aces. The board finished with the 2 and then the J to secure Baldwin his double up.

After the hand Baldwin was still fighting from the short stack with 1.7 million.

Baldwin Doesn't

Ruh roh.

Shawn Buchanan just doubled up at the expense of Eric Baldwin.

Buchanan chose to get a little tricky by limping in with pocket eights from the small blind after it folded around to him. The trickiness paid off because Baldwin moved all in with A 2 and Buchanan snap called. Buchanan's friends (the rowdiest in the bunch) cheered on his friend who was favored better than 2-1 to win the hand.

The camera rolled as the dealer produced a 6 2 T flop. The deuce gave Baldwin two more outs but the 8 on the turn gave Buchanan a set and lock on the hand.

The pot boosted Buchanan's stack to nearly 5 million chips while at the same time knocked Baldwin's down to a desperate 880k.

Williams Officially Crushing

David Williams
Thanks, Mom!

David Williams has held the chip lead during other points in this tournament but he's never looked as dominent as he does right now.

He's picking up blinds fast and he just won a sizable pot of Shawn Buchanan.

Buchanan opened for 270,000 and Williams called from the big blind.

Both players checked the 8 7 4 flop but upon seeing the 3 turn, Williams bet out 425,000 and forced Buchanan to lay his hand down.

Even more recently, David Williams raised it up from the button - again. The two blinds folded and Williams flashed his pocket aces to go along with his devilish grin.

"David Williams, stealing again from the button with two aces," said the floorman.

"Ooooh! Why, you play good and you run good!" hollered D-Dub's mom from the audience inducing a room-wide chuckle. Yes he does mom.

Williams has over 11 million chips and someone will have to make a stand ASAP if they want a shot at first place.

Baxter Down!

Billy Baxter
Robbed of 'Best Picture' Oscar

Fresh off his starring role in Pixar's Oscar winning film Up!, Billy Baxter came to the Bellagio to let everyone know that his stint in Hollywood had no diminishing effect on his poker skills.

Yesterday he  said that he was playing to win and didn't care about finishing in any other spot. Unfortunately he will have to settle for fifth place.

As has been the case for him throughout the last couple of days, he was low on chips. After shoving and picking up the blinds and antes, he shoved all in on the very next hand. This time David Williams took him up on his offer.

Williams turned over the K T while Baxter tabled the superior A J. Shouts from the crowd calling for a heart were countered by shouts from across the room begging for spades.

The flop came down a Williams friendly A J Q. Williams had just flopped broadway but Baxter's two pair still had some hope.

Williams' cheering section went wild while Baxter's regrouped and starting willing out an ace or a jack to fill him up.

Unfortunately for the Vegas veteran, the turn and river were both as bricky as they come and Baxter was relegated to the payout counter.

Just a few minutes later he was seen headed to the Bellagio Poker Room with two fistfuls of $5,000 chips which amounted to his fifth place payday of $246,921.

Out on the Bellagio Floor

WPT at Bellagio
Bellagio - home of the champions.

The Fontana Lounge is packed tighter than a can of sardines. So tightly in fact that they didn't have room in there for PL.com.

The Bellagio was nice enough to procure a table for us out in the middle of the casino floor. We may look a little ridiculous but have no fear! There is a job to be done here and we're going to do it.

Things can be a little distracting out here though. We're well on our way to answering hundreds of questions such as "Where is the lobby?", "Who is the chip-leader?" (nobody seems to care what the answer is so we're going to be making names up soon), and, our favorite, "What are you doing?"

As a side note, it appears that the true champions are out here wandering the casino - champions of consuming alcoholic beverages that is.

Despite it only being 5 p.m. we have already seen two people (women) being escorted out of the casino. Both were barely able to stand let alone walk.

One of them tried to make a last minute stop at the bar next to us. The security guards did not accommodate the request and were less than amused but somehow the drunken girl was exponentially less amused than them - and she let them know exactly how un-amused she was in very explicit terms.

Kudos to your dedication sister... kudos to you!

David Williams Steals Chip Lead

David Williams
There's a new Sheriff in town.

Eric Baldwin's short time as chip leader just came to an end thanks to David Williams.

Baldwin bet 240,000 from the cutoff and Williams called from the button. The blinds got out of the way and the flop came 3 2 2 and Baldwin bet 375,000 and Williams called.

The turn came 5 and both players checked. The river fell K and Baldwin made yet another bet, this time for 740,000.

Williams made the call and tabled A K to scoop the pot.

With the pot Williams took the chip lead with 5.9 million while Baldwin fell down to 3.8 million.

Blinds are so high that every hand with a couple bets is significant at this point.

One Down - Four To Go

The pipes, the pipes, they're callin'... son!

The quality of apparel just went up at the final table.

John O'Shea, the most casually dressed player showed up wearing a t-shirt and sweatpants. Though this might have ensured a high level of comfort for the long day ahead, his was cut short. Just a few minutes into play, he decided to make a stand.

O'Shea looked down at 3 6 and moved all in. The plan might have worked if Billy Baxter hadn't picked up the A T.

Baxter made the call and a board riddled with blanks sealed O'Shea's fate. He will head back to his hometown of Dublin, Ireland with $199,888 and a hell of a story to tell the boys at the pub.

O’Shea Goes All-In on First Hand

Final table
Six men enter, only one will leave (as WPT Champion)

Short-stack John O'Shea certainly isn't wasting any time at the final table of the WPT 2010 Final Table.

In the very first hand of the final table, David Benyamine bet 250,000 from the button but O'Shea moved all-in from the small blind for his last 1.1 million.

Benyamine gave it up and O'Shea dragged the first pot of the final table.

After the hand O'Shea mentioned he's got places to be. He wants to either double up early or catch a plane back to Dublin later tonight.
