Sumner Breezes Through Kid Poker

Daniel Negreanu moves all-in from the button and Brian Sumner makes the call. Sumner has pocket eights (8 8) against Negreanu's A 3. The flop comes 8 5 4 and Sumner has a set while Negreanu has a gut-shot wheel draw. The turn is the 3 and Negreanu is still drawing for a deuce. The river is the Q and Brian Sumner has won the 2007 World Poker Open and still has not cracked a smile.

For finishing second, Daniel Negreanu takes home $502,691, while Brian Sumner receives $913,986 to split with his family and his new friends at the I.R.S. He also receives a snazzy bracelet and an entry into the WPT World Championship event in April. Oh, and both players receive free beer. Congratulations to both finalists!

Kido Pham Plays Po-Mo Poker

Kido Pham pushes all-in for the third straight hand, shoving his chips into a pile in the middle that amounts to about $550,000. Nobody wants to mess with the man, and he takes down his blinds and antes. Pham's recent spate of all-in moves must be seen as a satire of Gary Kainer's modern approach to power poker, which is constrained by postcolonial themes and, of course, the Southern diaspora - Pham is playing post-modernist poker and working hard to break-down the all/in dichotomy. Well-played, sir.

Kido Pham makes the epic push from the cutoff, mixing his chips together and announcing a $1.5 million raise. The actual push is about $170,000. Young Cho makes the call on the button and the blinds get out of the way. Kido has K 7 against Cho's A 7. The first two cards out of the gate are the K and the K and as the board finishes out 9 6 A Kido Pham has staved off elimination and kept the dream alive.

Mr. All-in Returns, Cripples Kido

The blinds have gone up and this hand starts with Kido open-raising to $170,000. It's folded to Gary Kainer who executes his only move, the all-in. We're all convinced that Gary Kainer will do anything to avoid having to play after the flop and even after doubling up the hand before he continues to push. $787,000 is the all-in and the action is back on Kido. After a long deliberation, Kido makes the call. Gary Kainer has a hand this time, two red jacks and it's a race against Kido's big slick. The board comes out 9 7 Q 8 4 and Kainer's hooks hold up.

Kainer Doubles Through Pham

Kido Pham raises to $80,000 and the action folds around to Gary Kainer in the small blind, who moves all-in for another of $377,000. Pham, by now cracking a sliver of a smile, starts to chat Kainer up. He promises to do whatever Kainer wants him to do, and Kainer simply regards him, grinning like the Cheshire Cat. Pham stands and roams, plays with his chips a little, and continues to jaw at Kainer. Eventually he says "I call," but tries to take it back. The floor is called and it is decided that Pham has indeed made the call, and we're going to see a showdown.

Pham turns up K 7 to Kainer's A Q, and the flop comes A 6 4, giving Kido the nut-flush draw and pairing Kainer's ace. The turn is the 6, and the river is the 7, doubling up Kainer as Pham sits down and sulks.

Kido Doubles

It's folded to Kido Pham and he makes it $80,000 to go from the cut-off. Young Cho, on the button, makes the call and Daniel, in the small blind, folds. It's on Mr. All-In #2, AKA Gary Kainer, and he surprises everyone by just calling. The flop comes K Q 4 and Gary checks. Kido also checks and Young throws in $150k, Kainer gets out of the way. Kido starts counting out chips and then announces he's all-in.

Both Kido and Young get to their feet and Cho asks for a count of Pham's stack. Kido is all-in for an additional $504,000. Young makes the call and they turn over their hands. T 8 for Kido is somehow ahead of Cho's 7 4. The turn is the 2 and the river comes the T. Kido doubles and becomes the new chip leader with about $1.5 million.
