2006 Caribbean Poker Classic - Live Updates

The 2006 Caribbean Poker Classic is but a memory in the minds of PokerListings.com's crack tournament reporting staff - a memory clouded by a little too much sun and a few too many pina coladas. What we can tell you is this: Fredrik Haugen is the main event winner, taking home $137,000 after defeating Martin Wiklund heads-up at the final table. Thanks to a "by-the-chips" chop, Wiklund takes home $135,000 for himself, while third place finisher Pete Willy is the big winner, with a $165,000 payday of his own. We can also tell you that, to a man, we have killer suntans. Congratulations to all of the finalists!

Day 3 Live Updates

F-Haug is the Happiest $22,000 Winner You Ever Saw

Fredrik Haugen makes it $100,000 to go from the button and Martin Wiklund moves all-in over the top. Haugen calls with an air of resignation and Wiklund slams down his Q Q. Haugen isn't feeling the vibe with his K Q, but the flop turns his fortunes around, coming 5 K J and sending his friends on the sidelines into hysterics. Wiklund is drawing to one card, but the board finishes out 2 2 and Fredrik Haugen is, in name at least, the 2006 Caribbean Poker Classic Main Event Champion.

Ironically, thanks to the chop the three finalists agreed upon, the F-Haug will take home $137,000 for the victory, with second-place finisher Martin Wiklund getting $135,000 and third place finisher Pete Willy gets the lion's share of the prize pool AND a little bit more beach time, taking home $165,000 for his finish.

Haugen Hits House

This was a huge hand that began with a raise from Martin Wiklund to $90,000 before the flop. Haugen made the call and the flop came 5 7 3. Both players checked and the 7 on the turn brought a bet of $130,000 from Haugen, which Wiklund called. Another trey on the river and Haugen fired out a bet of $250,000. After some thought Martin made the call. Fredrik confidently flipped over K-7 for the full house and Martin unhappily mucked his hand.

F-Haug Evens the Score

Fredrik Haugen makes it $75,000 from the button and Martin Wiklund calls. The flop comes 2 5 Q and Wiklund bets out $100,000, which the F-Haug smooth calls. The turn is the J and Wiklund bets $175,000. Haugen is having none of the penny-ante shtick and makes it a cool $500,000 to go. This gives Wiklund some food for thought, and he chews it over for a few minutes before finally deciding he's had enough, mucking his cards while archly asking his opponent whether or not he was bluffing. Haugen is poker-faced.

New chip counts are the same as the old chip counts, but reversed: Haugen with $1.4 million, Wiklund with $900,000.

Sea Change

Fredrik Haugen limps in and Martin Wiklund checks his option. The flop comes J K T and Wiklund shoots out a $30,000 bet. Haugen makes it $60,000 and Wiklund counts out the difference and makes the call. The turn is the J and Wiklund checks to Haugen, who bets out $125,000. Wiklund pauses, letting the tension build, before raising all-in for a total of $501,500. Haugen thinks and thinks some more before making the call, and although Wiklund shows J 6 to Haugen's Q 6, Haugen has plenty of outs. The river card, the 4, is not one of them, and Wikland has doubled through Haugen to take over the chip lead.

Current chip counts have Wiklund ahead with $1.4 million to Fredrik Haugen's $900,000.

Haugen Adds to Stack

Fredrik Haugen makes it $50,000 to go from the button and Martin Wiklund calls in the big blind. The flop comes 9 2 3 and Wiklund checks to Haugen, who bets $85,000. Wiklund calls and the turn is the J. Wiklund checks again to Haugen, who shoots out a $175,000 torpedo, only to be matched again by Wiklund. The river card is the J and this time both players check. On the showdown, Wiklund shows pocket sixes, but Haugen slams down a nine and then, somewhat meekly, his 4 kicker. The nines are good and Haugen takes a $620,000 pot.

Pete Willy Eliminated

Pete Willy moved all-in for his last $100,000 in this hand and got a call from Martin Wiklund in the small blind. Wiklund turned over K Q and WIlly, not having looked at his cards, flipped them over one at a time and hoped for the best. He ended up with 8 T. The flop came K 2 7, giving Martin top pair but also giving Pete a flush draw. The turn was the 3, no help, and as the dealer burned the card before the river she accidentally exposed it and it was a heart! The river however was not, the 7 and the end of Pete Willy's tournament. It's a good thing he took the deal earlier and despite being knocked out in third place, he will receive the highest cash prize; $165,000.

Willy Crippled

No doubt Alias Pete Willy is thankful for making the chop when he did, as his fortunes have taken a significant turn for the worse after he secured himself a payday of at least $165,000 in this event. In the latest turn of events, Martin Wiklund made it $50,000 from the button and Willy called in the big blind. The flop came K K T and Willy checked to Wiklund, who bet $100,000. Willy moved all-in and Wiklund called immediately with K 8 to Willy's T 4. The board finished out A 4 and Martin Wiklund has doubled through Pete Willy, who is down to his last $49,500.

Caught in the Act

Pete Willy got the action started in this hand with a raise to $55,000 from the small blind. Martin Wiklund, in the big blind, re-raised an additional $100,000. With Haugen out of the way the action was back on Willy. He went into the tank for a few minutes and after a bit of thinking announced he was all-in. Martin took about two seconds to muck his cards face up, a lowly 6-3. "I can't call", he said with a smile.

Haugen Takes Another From Willy

Fredrik Haugen calls from the small blind and Alias Pete Willy makes it another $60,000 from the big blind. Haugen makes the call and the flop comes 4 9 8. Both players check to see the turn, which is the K and Willy bets $100,000, which Haugen coolly calls. The river is the 9 and Haugen again defers to Willy, who bets out $200,000. Haugen thinks for a few minutes before calling, and Willy doesn't look happy to see he's been looked up - and for good reason: he shows down 5 6, while Haugen has 7 8 for two pair and a huge pot.

Haugen Doubles

Fredrik Haugen was on the button in this hand and made it $50,000 to go. Pete WIlly in the small blind made the call and Martin got out of the way. The flop came 2 7 J and Pete checked. Fredrik bet out $85,000 and after about thirty seconds Pete announced he was all-in. Haugen insta-called and flipped over pocket queens for an over-pair to the board. Pete was in bad shape with pocket nines and needed some help. The T on the turn gave him an inside straight draw but another seven on the river was no help and Haugen doubles-up to around $850,000.

Nice Call Marty

This hand started with Pete Willy making a button raise to $40,000 and Martin Wilund making the call from the small blind. The flop came 4 5 4 and both players checked. The A on the turn brought two more checks and the 2 put the action on Martin once again. He began counting out chips and fired out a bet of $60,000. After a bit of thought Pete announced raise and pushed in a stack of $5,000 chips, $100k more. Martin looked a bit perplexed but after a few moments made the call. Willy turned over 6 9 and couldn't beat Martin's king high. A nice call from Wiklund to take down this pot.

Huge, Meaningless Pot for Willy

Fredrik Haugen makes it $40,000 to go from first position and Alias Pete Willy makes the call. Martin Wiklund raises to $120,000 from the big blind and the price is too steep for Haugen, who gets out of the way. Willy's not getting muscled out that easily, however, and he makes the call. The flop comes 4 9 6 and Willy checks to Wiklund, who bets out $120,000. Willy makes the call and the turn is the K. Both players check to see the river, which is the K. Now Willy bets out $150,000, and after a few moments' thought, Wiklund mucks his hand, giving Willy the huge pot.

Boon Busts

One hand after his countryman Rakesh Gupta was eliminated, Ryan Craig Boon has found himself frozen-out of the 2006 Caribbean Poker Classic. He limped in from the small blind and Fredrik Haugen checked his option. The flop came 7 7 J and Boon bet out $10,000. Haugen made the call and the turn was the T. Boon again bet $10,000 and Haugen raised to $30,000. The Scotsman took this in stride and, after thinking for a few moments, moved all-in for his last $83,000. Haugen thought it through and, liking his chances, made the call, showing J 9. Boon showed exactly bupkiss - Q 8 for the gutshot straight draw - and needed to improve on the river. The river was the 3 and Boon heads to the rail in fifth place with a $52,300 payday.

Flying Scotsman

Rakesh Gupta's mouth is writing checks his cards can't handle, and it has caught up to him rather quickly. After Frederik Lofgren took a large portion of his chips, Gupta seemed to go on tilt, raising on three successive hands and seemingly begging to be put all-in. He raised all-in from second position after announcing "very bad first card" and after the action folded around to Pete Willy in the big blind, Gupta again verily pleaded for a call. Willy obliged and the game was on.

Willy showed A J and Gupta showed 2 2. The flop came K 8 3 and the turn was the 8. An ace or a jack would do it for Gupta and if the board paired he was dunzo as well. The river came with the J and Rakesh Gupta is the sixth place finisher. He takes home $42,400 for his efforts and looks altogether unconcerned by the early KO.

Lofgren Stays Alive

Before looking at his cards Rakesh Gupta, in the big blind, asked for a count of Frederik Lofgren's chips. Lofgren was the only other player involved in the hand. The total was $140,000 and Rakesh, staring upward demanded, "Give me hand!" After taking a quick look at his hole cards he then added, "He's given me the hand, $140,000 to go". After a moment or two Lofgren made the call and flipped over pocket eights. He was in good shape against Flash's A-8. There was no bullet on the flop but the K-Q-J gave Flash a few more outs. A jack on the turn increased the list even more. Any king, queen, ace or ten would give him the win. Unfortunately the river was a six and Lofgren doubles-up and stays alive.
